OVERVIEW
Arthritis is the inflammation or tenderness of one or more joints of the body. There are various conditions in which bones involving the joint along with surrounding connective tissues are involved. Pain in joint, stiffness and swelling in joints are some of the most common symptoms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. However, gout and rheumatoid arthritis are the other prevalent forms of arthritis.
The treatment of arthritis is different for different types of arthritis. Some of the lifestyle and dietary changes with certain medications helps in reducing pain and swelling in the joints. It improves the quality of daily life of an individual.
TYPES OF ARTHRITIS
Following are the different types of arthritis:
- Osteoarthritis
- Gout
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS
There are several reasons for the occurrence of arthritis:
- A defective metabolism such as in gout and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease
- Physical trauma to the joint which can cause degenerative arthritis
- Having a genetic predisposition to osteoarthritis
- Suffering from lyme disease
- Improper functioning of the immune system such as rheumatoid arthritis
RISK FACTORS OF ARTHRITIS
Following are the risk factors which make a person more prone to arthritis:
- Increasing age
- Having a close relative suffering from arthritis
- Females are at more risk as compared to males
- Increased body weight
- Diabetes
- Recent arthroscopy
- Use of immunosuppressant drugs
- Artificial joint implants
- Bacterial infection
- Having a previous sport injury
SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS
The main symptoms of arthritis are:
- Pain in one or more parts of the body
- Stiffness in joint
- Swelling and redness in the affected joint
- Difficulty in movement of joint
PREVENTION OF ARTHRITIS
With some of the following steps, arthritis can be prevented:
- Doing physical exercise daily
- Eating healthy diet
- Avoid alcohol abuse
- Saying no to cigarette smoking
- Avoid use of tobacco products
DIAGNOSIS OF ARTHRITIS
The doctor will ask about the signs and symptoms of the disease to the patient. He will do a physical evaluation of the joint and see the range of motion. He will take the patient’s family history also. He will make the patient do some of the following tests:
- Blood tests
- X-ray
- CT scan
- MRI scan
- Ultrasound
- Joint fluid examination
