An anal fistula is an external opening that connects abscess present in the anus to the outside on the skin. It is a small tunnel like structure.
There are number of glands present inside the anus which produce mucus. When these glands get clogged, they become infected. This leads to formation of an abscess.
Near about half of these abscesses develop into a fistula.
There occurs pain, discomfort, skin irritation and swelling in the affected area. Anal fistula is often associated with underlying chronic bowel conditions.
