Hypochlorhydria is a condition where there is a decrease in the production of hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach , leading to insufficient levels of acid for proper digestion.
CAUSES OF HYPOCHLORHYDRIA
- Aging : Stomach acid production tends to decrease with age.
- Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection : This bacterium can cause inflammation in the stomach lining and reduce acid production.
- Autoimmune gastritis : An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the cells that produce stomach acid , leading to reduced acid production.
- Lack of vitamins
- Gastric surgery
- Certain medications : proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) , histamine H2-receptor antagonists and antacids can reduce stomach acid production when used long -term.
SYMPTOMS OF HYPOCHLORHYDRIA
- Gas
- Bloating
- Burping
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Weakness
- Malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies
- Hair loss
- Skin problems like acne or eczema
- Weak fingernails
AYURVEDA FOR HYPOCHLORHDRIA
- In Ayurveda Hypochlorhydria is related to an imbalance in the “Pitta” Dosha , which governs digestion and metabolism.
- According to Ayurvedic principles , factors such as excessive stress , improper diet and unhealthy lifestyle habits can lead to an aggravation of Pitta Dosha , resulting in reduced stomach acid production and poor digestion.
Ayurvedic Approaches to Managing Hypochlorhydria include :
Panchakarma therapy
- Abhyanga
- Vamana
- Virechana
- Basti
Dietary changes
- Emphasizing foods that pacify Pitta Dosha such as cooling and soothing foods like sweet fruits , vegetables and whole grains.
- Avoiding spicy , sour and acidic foods that can aggravate pitta.
Herbal Remedies
Using herbs that are known to support digestion and stimulate stomach acid production .
- Ginger

Lifestyle Modifications
