DEFINITION
- Gastrointestinal Bleeding also known as GI bleeding refers to any form of bleeding that occurs within the digestive tract.
- This bleeding can occur anywhere from the mouth to the rectum.
Types of GI bleeding
- Upper GI Bleeding :- This type of bleeding occurs in the upper part of the GI tract which includes the esophagus , stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Common causes of upper GI bleeding include :
- Peptic ulcers
- Gastritis
- Esophageal varices
- Portal hypertensive gastropathy
- Esophagitis
- Stomach cancer
- Liver cancer
- Lower GI Bleeding :- This occurs in the lower part of the GI tract which includes the rest of the small intestine , the large intestine (colon) , rectum and anus.
Causes of lower GI bleeding include :
- Diverticulosis
- Inflammatory bowel disease such as crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- Hemorrhoids
- Anal fissures
- Rectal ulcers
- Colon polyp
SYMPTOMS
- Abdominal cramping
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Cool ,clammy, pale skin
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rectal bleeding usually in or with stool
- Black stool
- Vomiting blood which might be red or dark brown
- Headache
- Chest pain

Dietary changes
- Avoid foods that trigger gastric secretions like spicy and salty foods.

- Food reach in Omega 3 fatty acid
- Avoid taking refined flour , pasteurized dairy products
