Trigeminal Neuralgia and its Ayurvedic Treatment

Introduction
Trigeminal neuralgia refers to the sensation of sudden and severe facial pain, which may last from a few seconds to a few minutes. This condition may occur on either one side of the face or both the sides.
Causes of trigeminal neuralgia
- Pressure on a vein due to swelling or tumor in a blood vessel
- Multiple sclerosis
- Stroke
- Demyelination of the nerve
- Pressure on the nerve or ganglion
Symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia
- Severe, sharp and stinging pain that feels like an electric shock
- Pain lasting from a few seconds to several minutes
- Persistent pain and burning sensation
- A dull ache in your face and jaw
- Mild sensation like blowing of wind, mild facial touch may also cause pain
- Numbness
- Pain that occurs with facial spasms
- Mostly pain of trigeminal neuralgia will be on one side of the face, but in certain cases it can present on both sides.
- In case of involvement of Ophthalmic branch pain radiates to forehead, nose, and eyes.
- When maxillary branch is involved pain will be there in the lower eyelid, side of nose, cheek, gum, lip, and upper jaw
- In Mandibular this root gives neural supply to the lower jaw-gums, and lower lip.
Ayurvedic view of Trigeminal Neuralgia
This disease is correlated to Anantavata. Anantvata is a disease caused due to vata dosha. The vitiated vata gets aggravated in the face and causes pain and swelling. The approach of Ayurvedic treatment of trigeminal neuralgia is toi correct the imbalance of the doshas. This is done by dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, and the use of herbs.
Some lifestyle changes that can help to relieve symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia include avoiding stressful situations, practicing yoga or meditation, and getting regular exercise.

- Rasayan Vati
