WHAT IS INSOMNIA?
Insomnia is a sleeping disorder in which a person finds hard to fall asleep or to stay asleep. If a person wakes up, then he finds difficult to fall asleep. Nearly 10% of people worldwide are affected by insomnia. The normal amount of sleep which a person should have is between 6 to 8 hours. However, it varies from person to person. When a person doesn’t sleep properly, then it can drain energy levels and impacts his or her health and work performance.
Insomnia can be either acute or chronic. Acute insomnia occurs for a short period of time such as for a few days or weeks. It is caused due to some stress or a traumatic event. Chronic insomnia is long-term insomnia which lasts for a month or more.
Insomnia is not a dangerous disease but in severe cases, it can lead to serious health problems and require medical intervention.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF INSOMNIA?
There has not been found any particular cause of insomnia but it occurs due to a combination of several factors. Some factors can be the causes whereas others can add to it. Following are the causes of insomnia:
- Having a family history of insomnia
- Increased activity in brain
- Any physical or emotional trauma
- Hyperacidity
- Irregular bed time schedule
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Eating too much late in evening
- Certain medications like painkillers, anti-allergics, etc
- Difficult life circumstances
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF INSOMNIA?
There are some factors which increase the risk of a person developing insomnia. Following are some of the risk factors of insomnia:
- Age above 60 years
- Females are at more risk as compared to males
- Irregular schedule which disrupts sleep-wake cycle
- Alcohol consumption
- Cigarette smoking
- Jet lag
- Suffering from Parkinson’s disease
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF INSOMNIA?
Following are the common signs and symptoms of insomnia:
- Feeling tired
- Difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep
- Waking up during the night
- Drowsiness
- Irritability
- Lack of concentration
- Difficulty in focusing
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Increased number of errors
- Decrease in memory
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF INSOMNIA?
In most of the cases, insomnia goes on its own. But some cases require medical attention. If insomnia is not dealt properly, it can lead to some serious complications. Following are the several complications of insomnia:
- Decreased performance at school or workplace
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Slowed response time
- Sleep apnea
- Diabetes
- Increased body weight
- Psychosis
WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC CONCEPT OF INSOMNIA?
Insomnia is known as Anidra or Nidranasha in Ayurveda. Nidranasha is the difficulty in maintaining sleep or unable to fall asleep. There occurs aggravation of all the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha. It is a tridoshaj disease which occurs because of the bad eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle. Unhealthy lifestyle includes irregular physical exercise, sedentary lifestyle, late night mobile usage, etc. There are some ayurvedic herbs which help in relaxing mind and give soothing effect to both mind and body.
The various ayurvedic herbs are:
- Ashwagandha
- Jatamansi
