WHAT IS HEAT STROKE?
Heat stroke is an emergency condition which is caused by overheating of the body due to prolonged exposure or excessive physical exertion in high temperatures. It is the most serious form of heat injury in which the body temperature rises to 104 C or more. Heat stroke is also known as sun stroke or hyperthermia. It occurs in summer months. It requires immediate treatment as it is life-threatening. If not treated at time, it can lead to rapid damage of brain, kidneys, heart and muscles. As the delay in treatment increases, there can occur serious health complications or even death. Heat stroke is very common in tropical areas where there is direct and long exposure to sunlight.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEAT STROKE
Heat stroke is of the following different types:
Exertional heat stroke: It occurs because of the over-exertion in hot and humid conditions. It develops in a few hours.
Non-exertional heat stroke: It is also known as classic heat stroke. It occurs because of underlying health issues or increasing age.
WHAT ARE THE FACTORS WHICH ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HEAT STROKE?
Heat stroke can occur to anybody but infants and elderly are at more risk as their bodies are less efficient in regulating body temperature. Soldiers, athletes and laborers are at increased risk of heat stroke.
Following are some of the risk factors of heat stroke:
- Men are at more risk as compared to women
- Not drinking enough water
- Alcohol intake
- Disturbed sleeping pattern
- Certain medications like sedatives, tranquilizers, diuretics, etc
- Wearing tight and heavy clothing
- Obesity
- Having a past history of heat stroke
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STROKE?
Following are the signs and symptoms which occur in heat stroke:
- Confusion
- Disorientation
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Ataxia
- Problem in balancing
- Hot or flushed skin
- High or low blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
- Loss of consciousness
- Increased respiratory rate
- Seizures
- Weakness
SOME OF THE POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS OF HEAT STROKE
Following are the serious complications which arise with heat stroke:
- Swelling in brain
- Damage to the nerves
- Kidney failure
- Liver damage
- Metabolic dysfunction
HOME REMEDIES FOR HEAT STROKE
Following are some of the remedies which can be performed at home and help in prevention of heat stroke:
Aam panna
It is made up of raw mangoes and some spices. It is a refreshing drink which acts as a great health tonic. The spices which are added have a cooling effect such as cumin, fennel, pepper, kala namak, etc. They maintain electrolyte content and provide energy to the body.
Tamarind drink
Tamarind water or drink is also one of the best summer drink. Tamarind is soaked and boiled in water. It is then strained and some sugar is added to it. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. The decoction lowers the body temperature and thus good for summers.
Intake of onion
Onion is considered to be best home remedy for heat stroke. It can consumed as it is (salad, chutney) or in the form of juice. The onion juice can be applied behind the ears or on the chest. It cools the body system by lowering down the temperature.
Buttermilk
Buttermilk is loaded with probiotics and various vitamins and minerals. It maintains good gut health and replenishes body with electrolytes which are lost due to sweating. It helps in keeping the body hydrated.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains various vitamins and minerals. It can be taken with cold water and honey or a few drops are added in the fruit juice. It helps in replenishing lost minerals such as magnesium and potassium which are lost through sweating.
