A condition that leads to weak, porous and brittle bones that even mild stresses like coughing or bending over or a fall can cause a fracture. Bones are living tissues that undergo continuous break down and replacement. Osteoporosis condition develops when production of new bone is insufficient to counteract the loss of existing bone. This condition mostly develops without any symptoms or pain and weaker bones are frequently not detected until painful fracture occur. The most common fractures are fractures of wrist, hip and spine.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF OSTEOPOROSIS?
This condition develops due to decrease in bone density, that makes the bones more fragile. Bones usually become weaker with increasing age, but in some individuals this process tends to happen more speedily.
There are certain factors that increases the risk of developing this condition.
Some common Risk factors that cannot be changed includes:
- Being over the age of 70 years
- Having history of previous fracture
- Female
- Family History of hip fracture or osteoporosis
- Early Menopause
Avoidable Risk factors includes :
- Sedentary life style
- Low body weight
- Tobacco use
- High alcohol intake
- Low muscle mass and strength
Medical Conditions that increase the risk of Osteoporosis includes:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Cancer
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Kidney disease
- Celiac disease
- Multiple myeloma
- Liver disease
- Hyperthyroidism
Certain medications that increase the risk of Osteoporosis includes:
- Anti-androgen therapy
- Thyroid hormone replacement therapy
- Steroids
- Anti-psychotic medications
- Aromatase inhibitors
- Anti-depressant medications
- Anti-epileptic medications
- Thiazolidinedione
- Proton-pump inhibitors
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF OSTEOPOROSIS?
Best way to prevent serious consequences like bone pain or bone fracture, is to treat osteoporosis in its earliest stages. Early detection of bone loss is rare but some symptoms can point towards potential bone loss like :
- Weaker Grip Strength
- Receding Gums
- Weak and Brittle Fingernails
After further decrease in bone mass, individual could start to notice symptoms that are more overt, like :
- Loss of height : One of the most noticeable symptom . Due to spine compression fracture the height of the individual may become short.
- Fracture from a fall : Fracture of bone even after minor movement like stepping off a curb is the most common sign of fragile bones. Sometimes fracture can be triggered by strong cough or sneeze.
- Back or Neck pain : This condition can contribute in causing compression fractures of spine. The collapsed vertebrae may pinch the nerves that radiate from the spinal cords thus causing pain. The pain may range between minor tenderness to debilitating pain.
- Stooped posture : Compression of vertebrae can cause slight curving of the upper back. A stooped back is called as Kyphosis, that may cause neck and back pain. The Breathing is also affected due to limited expansion of lungs and extra pressure on airway.

In Ayurved the 5th Dhatu is Asthi(bone). It is claimed that Medha Dhatu, through Asthivaha channels, agni(fire), vayu(air) and prithavi(earth) mahabutas, forms the bones. If there is decrease in digestive fire, the bones receive insufficient nutrients, that can results in osteoporosis.
