INTRODUCTION
Dry eye disease is a medical condition which is characterized by inability to produce tears by the eyes. Tears are produced by lacrimal glands present within the eye orbit above the lateral side of eye. They help in lubrication of the eyes. When there are no tears, then there is stinging or burning sensation in eyes. A person has itching and gritty feeling in his/her eyes. Normally, there are three layers of tear film that cover the eye and protect it. It makes the surface smooth and stable. But in dry eye syndrome, there occurs disruptions in the tear film, thereby causing numerous symptoms.
The diagnosis of dry eye syndrome is difficult as there are various factors responsible for it. The treatment includes certain oral medications and eye drops. Good eating habits and healthy lifestyle can help a lot in management of dry eye syndrome.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DRY EYE SYNDROME?
Dry eyes occur due to variety of reasons that lead to disruption of the tear film. The tear film consists of three layers – fatty oils, aqueous layer and mucus. This combination helps in keeping the surface of eye smooth, clear and lubricated. When any of these layers is not produced, it leads to dry eye syndrome.
Following are the reasons for decreased production of tears by the lacrimal glands:
- Blepharitis
- Ectropion and entropion
- Allergic eye disease
- Autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, sarcoidosis
- Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
- Deficiency of vitamin A
- Parkinson’s disease
- Nerve damage
- Laser eye surgery
- Dry air
- Certain medicines such as hormones, antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, decongestants, etc
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF DRY EYE SYNDROME?
Some factors increase the risk of a person developing dry eyes. Following are the risk factors of dry eye syndrome:
- Age above 50 years
- Women are more prone as compared to men
- Eating diet low in vitamin A
- Regularly wearing contact lenses
- Having a history of refractive surgery
- Menopause
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYE SYNDROME?
The common signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome are:
- Grittiness in eyes
- Stinging or burning sensation in eyes
- Increased sensitivity to eyes
- Redness in eyes
- Itching in eyes
- Blurred vision
- Eye fatigue
- Watery eyes
- Stringy mucus in eyes
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF DRY EYES?
Following are the complications which are associated with dry eyes:
- Corneal ulcers
- Abrasion of cornea
- Inflammation of eyes
- Poor quality of life as a person gets difficulty in performing day to day activities
- Loss of vision
HOW PREVENTION OF DRY EYES CAN BE DONE?
By following some of the steps, dry eyes can be kept at bay. Following are the precautions:
- Avoid direct air blowing in the eyes such as car heaters, hair dryers, air conditioners
- Wearing sunglasses
- Taking periodic eye breaks
- Quit smoking
- Use artificial tears regularly

4. Roshani Eye Drop
Roshani Eye Drop is pure Ayurvedic formulation used in problems like frequent travel, work on a computer, and lack of sleep. This eye drops contains herbal ingredients like Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Shwet Chandan, Rakta chandan, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Haridra( Curcuma longa), Gulab (Rosa damascena), Adrak (Zingiber officinale), Bahera (Terminalia bellirica), Pudina (Mentha spicata), Saindhavan lavan, Phitakari, etc. This eye drop soothes up the eyes, prevents infections and clears off particles in the eyes, improves vision.
Dosage: Put one drop in each eye in the morning and at bed time.
5. Triphla Syrup
Triphala Syrup ancient herbal remedy contains equal parts of three herbs like T. Chebula, T.bellirica rox, and E. officinalis. These ingredients are very beneficial for digestive system, maintain bowel wellness, helps in abdominal bloating, and flatulence. Triphala Syrup is tridosha hara. It is used to detoxify the body and support the immune system. It is known for its antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral abilities. It is prescribed for treating fatigue and gastric distress, pneumonia, constipation, vaginal infections, piles and eye problems.
Recommended Dosage– Take 1 tablespoon twice a day.
