INTRODUCTION
Endometriosis is a painful medical condition which is characterized by the growth of endometrium in the areas other than the inside of uterus. Endometrium is the innermost lining of the uterus and responsible for menstrual cycle. This layer grows and becomes thick during each menstrual cycle. When the layer grows to its maximum, it sheds off causing bleeding. In endometriosis, this layer grows in other areas like ovaries, fallopian tubes and in the tissue lining the pelvis. This tissue normally grows during every menstrual cycle but the tissue in other areas doesn’t get any exit. It thus starts collecting there. This leads to irritation of the surrounding tissues and later formation of scar tissue and adhesions. Adhesions are the bands of fibrous tissue which cause sticking of pelvic tissue and organs.
Excessive pain during menstruation is one of the most common symptoms of endometriosis. Heavy bleeding and difficulty in conception are also the symptoms of endometriosis. AYURVEDIC VIEWPOINT OF ENDOMETRIOSIS
In Ayurveda, endometriosis comes under the category of Yoni vyapad. It is caused due to the imbalance of vata and kapha doshas. Bad eating habits and lack of physical exercise are mainly responsible for endometriosis. The aggravated vata dosha reaches the female reproductive system and cause troublesome symptoms such as severe pain and discomfort in abdomen. Kapha dosha leads to excessive mucus formation and causes formation of cysts.
