INTRODUCTION
Pancreatitis is a condition in which there occurs inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreas is a long, leaf-like gland which is present at the base of stomach. It is a composite gland which produces both hormones and digestive juices. The digestive juices contain enzymes which help in digestion of food. Insulin and glucagon are the hormones released by pancreas. They help in regulation of blood sugar levels. When inflammation of pancreas occurs, all these functions get disturbed.
Pancreatitis is of two types – acute and chronic pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and lasts only for a few days. It is easy to manage. Chronic pancreatitis develops over several years and has serious health complications. The treatment involves certain medications and sometimes surgery.
