WHAT IS HYPERTHYROIDISM?
Hyperthyroidism is a medical condition which is characterized by the increased functioning of thyroid gland. It is also known as overactive thyroid. T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) are the two main hormones of hyperthyroidism. The levels of thyroid hormones are increased which speeds up the metabolism of body. Rapid weight loss, increased heartbeat and anxiety are some of the common symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It can affect the whole body and requires medical attention.
There are several types of treatments available for hyperthyroidism. Oral medicines like anti-thyroid medicines are used for managing the symptoms of it. Surgical removal of a part or all of the thyroid gland is required in rare cases.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HYPERTHYROIDISM?
Thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland present at the base of the neck. It produces two hormones such as thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These two hormones are responsible for metabolism of whole body. They have affect on every cell of the body. They help in regulation of body temperature and regulate heart rate also. When the amount of these hormones is increased, all these functions get disturbed. It has a great impact on the whole body.
There are various causes which lead to occurrence of hyperthyroidism:
- Adenoma of thyroid gland
- Graves’ disease – an autoimmune disease in which the cells of immune system start attacking the cells of thyroid gland
- Thyroiditis – inflammation of the thyroid gland
- Presence of nodules in thyroid gland
- Excessive consumption of iodine
- Tumor of testes
- Ovarian tumor
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM?
As in hyperthyroidism whole body is affected, there are variety of symptoms occur in it. Following are the signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Heart palpitations
- Trembling
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Increase in appetite
- Sweating
- Frequent stools
- Diarrhea
- Blurred vision
- Heat intolerance
- Protrusion of eyes
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Hair fall
- Thinning of hair
- Fatigue
- Swelling and enlargement of neck – goiter
- Irritability
- Feeling nervous
- Tremors in hands and fingers
- Anxiety
- Thinning of skin
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS WHICH ARE ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM?
Following are the complications which are linked with hyperthyroidism:
- Weakening of bones
- Atrial fibrillation
- Pressure in eyes
- Swelling and discoloration in skin
- Delirium
WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC SAY REGARDING HYPERTHYROIDISM?
In Ayurveda, hyperthyroidism is called Ati karshya roga. It occurs because of tridosha imbalance. The disturbance of the three doshas occur because of the several factors like extensive fasting, intake of dry foods, old age, lack of sleep, etc. First of all, vata dosha is balanced and then other two doshas are approached.
Some of the herbs which are very beneficial in management of hyperthyroidism are:

3. Detox Premium Powder
