Understanding psychological disorders:
Psychological disorder or mental disorder refers to significant disturbance in the cognition, behavior and emotional regulation of an individual. It is mostly associated with impairment of important areas of functioning of brain. There are various mental disorders like anxiety disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD), schizophrenia, eating disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders etc. Mental disorders affects the person’s ability to think, feel and behave. Genetic constitution and environment around you plays a major role in mental ailments.
What is mental soundness?
- A well balanced and pleasant state of mind
- Proper and satisfactory sleep
- Being cheerful and gracious
- Mind not getting afflicted with adverse events
- Steady and well balanced mental faculties
- Control over dharniya vega such as kama (lust), krodha (anger), bhaya (fear), shoka (greif), lobha (greed), moha (infatuation) according to Ayurveda.
Concept of mental illness in Ayurveda:
Life according to Ayurveda is amalgam of four independent components namely, shareer (the body), indriya (motor and sensory faculties), satva (the mind), atma (the soul). A completely healthy life needs complimentary support of each of the elements and thus health means physical, mental, sensory and spiritual wellbeing. Vitiation in any of these factors leads to mental distress.
Mental disorders are classified under Unmada in Ayurveda. Acharya charaka defines Unamada as impairment in functions of 8 aspects or factors that a human being constitutes such as Manah (mind), buddhi (intellect), smriti (memory), bhakti (inclination), sheela (character/ habits), cheshta (psycho-motor activity), achara (conduct/ behavior), janana (knowledge/cognition). There are three factors responsible for the vitiation of above given factors such as:
- Pragyaapradha (intellectual blasphemy)
- Asatnyendriyeartha samyoga (inappropriate contact of sense organs with object)
- Parinama (transformation of nature)
Who are more prone to psychological disorders?
- Genetic constitution and family history
- Traumatic brain injury
- Use of alcohol or recreational drugs
- Losing loved ones
- Going through excessive stress
- Biological factors such as chemical imbalance in brain
- Having serious illness like cancer
- Mother’s exposure to toxins or virus while pregnant
- Small social circle or having no friends or family
Some preventive measures of strengthen Mind:
- Meditation: Meditation simply means to live simply and honestly in the world as it is. An effective meditation of 15-30 minutes promotes calmness, reduce stress and increase focus. It helps people to identify and accepting negative thoughts and emotions and helps to overcome those emotions. Makes person mentally and emotionally strong. There are 5 stages of meditation:
- Awareness of present moment
- Subduing the negative mind
- Mindfulness
- Dawning awareness or becoming more conscious
- Unwavering commitment
- A good sleep: A sound sleep of 6-8 hours is necessary for the proper functioning of the brain. During sleep there is reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, rate of breathing that is the calmest state of mind. Sleep aids in creativity and increases the problem solving capacity, lowers the depressing state of mind and other mental disorders and even increases the life expectancy.
- Following Dincharya (daily regime) and ritucharya (seasonal regime): One should follow the dincharya or ritucharya as it is an imperative part of health care to fill each day with significant essential care, eating healthy, eating at proper timings, having regular sleep schedule. It balances the doshic activity (body elements). Following a proper regime increases focus, clarity, stabilized emotions and balanced state of hormones.
- Panchkarma therapies: Ayurveda have treasure of panhkarma to deals with any kind of ailments. Panchkarma like shirodhara (pouring medicated oil or decoction on the forehead), nasya (nasal therapy), abhyanga (massage with medicated oil) etc are helpful in strengthening the nerves and muscles and relaxes the body and mind.
Some herbs to strengthen Mind:
- Brahmi (Bacopa monierrie): Brahmi is also known as brain tonic or best brain cell rejuvenator. It improves cognition, intelligence and power of thinking.
- Ashwagandha (withania somnifera): Ashwagandha is known to be an adaptogen, immunodular and a brain tonic. It improves the mind clarity and balances hormones.
- Haridra (curcumin): Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory herbs and also works as stimulant.
- Jatamansi (Nardostachy jatamansi): jatamansi has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and blood purifying properties. it helps in reducing mental stress and anxiety due to the presence of essential oils in it.
