The group of disease that cause blockage of air flow that is not fully reversible and breathing related problems is referred as COPD. It is common, preventable and treatable chronic lung disease.
COPD is sometimes referred as Chronic bronchitis or Emphysema, most of the people show characteristic symptoms of both diseases.
Chronic Bronchitis: Chronic inflammation of lower respiratory tract which leads to excessive secretion of mucus, cough and dyspnea. The excessive mucus and swelling of tube narrows the tube opening making it hard to get air in and out of lungs.
Emphysema: Complex lung disease in which damage is caused to walls of air sac that make it hard to get full breath.

RISK FACTORS OF COPD :
- Smoking (active or passive)
- Long -term exposure to air pollutants like dust, fumes and chemicals.
- Genetic conditions like Alpha-1 deficiency.
- History of respiratory infect in childhood.
SYMPTOMS OF COPD:
- Chronic cough with mucus or sputum
- Shortness of breath after daily activities.
- Persistent wheezing
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Recurring respiratory infections.
- Cyanosis of lips and fingernail bed.
STAGES OF COPD:
The COPD is further divided into 4 stages:
- STAGE 1 (Mild COPD):
It is mild stage where person feel out of breath which doing light exercises. another sign is presence of cough with sputum. Mostly paitents are not aware or their condition
- STAGE 2(Moderate COPD):
Symptoms worsen than stage 1. Cough and mucous production worsen .Patient develop shortness of breath even during daily activities like walking.
- STAGE 3( Sever COPD):
Increase in sputum secretion, change in color of sputum, more shortness of breathing and worsening of cough
- STAGE 4( Severe COPD):
Almost everything patient do result in shortening of breath which limits patients mobility. May have difficulty in breathing even when resting.
COMLICATIONS OF COPD :
- Respiratory failure or insufficiency.
- Pneumothorax
- Pneumonia and respiratory infections
- Chronic diseases like Arthritis, congestive heart failure, diabetes etc
- Depression or other mental conditions.
- Limitation in daily actives like walking or climbing stairs
DIAGNOSIS OF COPD :
- History taking
- Physical examination
- Spirometry : To evaluate the airflow
- Pulse oximetry
- Electrocardiogram
- Chest X-ray or CT- scan
- Peak test flow
- Sputum sample testing
AYURVEDIC APPROACH :
COPD is slight similarities with Shwasa rog and kasa rog.
It is a disorder of Pranvaha srotas. The exposure to etiologic factors leads to aggravation of prana and udana vayu in pranvaha srotas enforcing kapha to obstruct pranvaha srotas. The obstruction cause movement of vayu in all direction in pranvaha srotas, ultimately causing disease.
HERBS FOR COPD :
- Licorice – Has soothing effect on lungs and adjust the mucous production. It is used if patient have trouble in coughing up sputum.
- Ashwagandha – Given to COPD patients due to rejuvenating and strengthening effects of the herb.
- Pushkarmool – Beneficial for reduction of chest congestion and wheezing.

The sachet contains ingredients like – Sitopladi churna, Abhrak bhasma, Laxmi vilas ras, Godanti bhasma, etc. It is used mainly in chronic cough, whooping cough and trouble breathing. It also relieves congestion of chest, sore throat. The ingredients loosen the mucus accumulated in the chest thus making it easy to cough it out. Its main therapeutic effects appear on lungs, pleura, and airways.
Recommended Dosage– Take 1 Sachet twice a day with normal water.
4. Giloy capsule:
Giloy capsules are formed with the standardized extract of herb giloy (Tinospora cordifolia). The Giloy herb improves immunity, removes toxins from body, purifies blood, beneficial in cough, cold, fever, & bronchitis.
Recommended Dosage:Take 2 capsules twice a day with normal water.
5. Trikatu Syrup:
Trikatu combines the goodness of Black pepper, Ginger and, Long pepper to create an herbal remedy for digestive ailments, sluggish metabolism, obesity, and high cholesterol. This syrup has best results in anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and expectorant. It also help to tackle the weight problems or obesity.
