- D-dimer blood test – D-dimer is a type of protein produced by blood clots. In most cases of DVT, the level of D-dimer in the blood increases.
- Duplex ultrasound – This is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves to create images of how blood flows through the veins. This is the standard test performed to diagnose DVT.
- Venography – Dye is injected into a large vein in the foot or ankle. To look for the presence of blood clots, an X-ray creates clear images of the veins in the legs and feet. Since this is an invasive test, it is rarely done.
