WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME?
Irritable bowel syndrome is a group of symptoms which affect the large intestine. It is a common gastrointestinal disorder. It is also known as spastic colon, irritable colon, mucous colitis and spastic colitis. It is associated with abdominal pain, cramps and excessive gas formation. The intensity of symptoms vary from one person to another. It is a chronic condition which can be managed by some lifestyle changes and diet management. In severe cases, medication is required.
CAUSES OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
There has been found no reason for the occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome. However, some of the following factors can be responsible:
- Imbalance of the gut microbes
- Weak intestinal contractions
- Gastroentertitis
- Bacterial overgrowth in intestine
- Abnormal levels of serotonin in intestine
- Stress in early life especially during childhood
SYMPTOMS OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
The common signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are:
- Abdominal cramps
- Pain in abdomen
- Bloating
- Diarrhea at night
- Weight loss
- Bleeding from rectum
- Anemia
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Presence of mucus in stool
- Body fatigue
- Food intolerance
- Indigestion
- Anxiety
- Acidity
- Headache
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
In ayurveda, there are three doshas in body – vata, pitta and kapha. They are present in balance with each other. But due to some abnormality, the balance among the three doshas gets disturbed. This leads to manifestation of a disease.
Irritable bowel syndrome is called grahani. It occurs because of the decreased amount of jatharagni or digestive fire of the body. This causes improper digestion and the toxins get accumulated in the body.
Various methods used in Ayurveda for its treatment are:
- Agnideepana
- Vatanulomana
- Shodhan
- Shaman
- Panchkarma
- Abhyanga
- Shirodhara
- Chakrabasti
DURATION OF TREATMENT OF IBS IN AYURVEDA
The treatment of IBS in ayurveda involves 4-5 months but the patient gets relief within15 to 20 days of start of medications.

- Pittashekhar Rasa
- These are herbal tablets prepared from ingredients like Sootshekhar rasa, Bilva majja, Kalmegha, Shankha bhasma, Kapardika bhasma, etc. that balances pitta dosha in the body. - Panchsakar Churna
- This is a classical herbal churna prepared from ingredients such as Saindhavan Lavana (Rock Salt), Swarnapatri (Cassia angustifolia), Shatapushpa (Anethum sowa), Shunti (Zingiber officinale), Balaharitaki (Terminalia chebula). These all in combination deal with problems like loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, constipation, weak digestion, etc.
- Recommended Dosage:Take a half teaspoon of this churna twice daily with normal water.
- Kutaj Ghan Vati
- Kutaj Ghan vati is purely herbal formulation. It is very useful in curing diarrhea, intestinal infection, and dysentery. These herbal tablets deal with all signs & symptoms related to diarrhea patients. Kutaj ghan vati contains ingredients like Kutaj (Holarrhena antidysenterica), Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum) that manage the symptoms like abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, loose stools, general weakness, fatigue, etc. The herbs in these tablets show antioxidant, anti-diarrheal, anti-inflammatory, etc properties.
- Recommended Dosage: Take two tablets twice a day before meal with water.
- Sheet Dhara Syrup
- This herbal syrup is prepared from ingredients such as ajwain satav, mushak kapoor, peppermint, etc that naturally relieve the symptoms like bloating, blenching, nausea, vomiting, feeling of discomfort, etc. The regular use of this herbal syrup neutralizes the high acid content, reduces
abdominal pain, & cramps. - Recommended dosage: Take half teaspoonful of this syrup in half a cup of water. Drink this mixture twice daily on an empty stomach.
- Digestion care tablet
