Fatty liver is a medical condition in which accumulation of fat takes place in liver. It is also known as hepatic steatosis. Liver is the second largest gland in the body. It helps in processing of nutrients and removes toxins from the body. Liver always contain a small amount of fat in it but excessive fat can become a health issue. The main cause of fatty liver is alcohol abuse. Large amount of fat in liver causes inflammation of liver and thus, cause formation of scar tissue. In later cases, it can lead to liver failure.

TYPES OF FATTY LIVER
There are two main types of fatty liver:
- Alcoholic fatty liver: When fatty liver is because of the excessive intake of alcohol, it is called alcoholic fatty liver.
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver: When fatty liver occurs due to some other cause, it is called non-alcoholic fatty liver.
CAUSES OF FATTY LIVER
The exact reason of fat build up in liver is not known. But it is believed due to some of the following reasons:
- Alcohol abuse
- High levels of sugar in blood
- Insulin resistance
- Excessive body weight
- Increased trigylcerides in blood
- Malnutrition
- Viral hepatitis
- Having genetic predisposition
- Increasing age
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Sleep apnea
- Hypothyroidism
- Low activity of pituitary gland
- Any metabolic syndrome
- Exposure to certain toxins and chemicals
- Removal of gall bladder
SYMPTOMS OF FATTY LIVER
The common signs and symptoms of fatty liver are:
- Swelling in abdomen called ascites
- Pain in upper part of abdomen
- Body weakness
- Redness of palms
- Enlargement of spleen called splenomegaly
- Pallor
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of hunger
- Rapid weight loss
- Nausea or vomiting
- Itching
- Bruising
- Dark colored urine
- Mental confusion
COMPLICATIONS OF FATTY LIVER
The complications which are associated with fatty liver are:
- Slurred speech
- Ascites
- Swelling of esophageal veins
- Drowsiness
- Liver cancer
- Liver failure
DIAGNOSIS OF FATTY LIVER
The doctor will take the complete medical history of the patient. He will do physical examination. He will make the patient do some of the following tests for the evaluation of fatty liver:
- Complete blood count
- Liver function tests
- Celiac disease screening test
- Fasting blood sugar
- Hemoglobin A1C
- Lipid profile
