HYDRONEPHROSIS

DEFINITION

Hydronephrosis is a kidney health condition in which one or both kidneys become inflamed. The reason for the swelling is that there is no complete emptying of the bladder, that is, urine is not able to pass completely, due to which the kidney is affected.

WHAT IS HYDRONEPHROSIS?

• Hydronephrosis is a condition in which one or both of your kidneys become swollen. Inflammation occurs due to the urine not passing properly from the kidney, due to which the urine remains in the kidney and causes problems. This may be due to a blockage in the tube passing urine or due to an anatomical defect that the urine is not able to drain completely from the kidney.
• Hydronephrosis is not a primary disease, but it is caused by some other disease. It is structural and arises due to obstruction in the urinary tract. According to statistics, one out of every 100 children is affected by it. Hydronephrosis can occur at any age. If hydronephrosis is detected in young children or before birth, it can be treated before delivery.
  

SYMPTOMS OF HYDRONEPHROSIS

normally, urine flows through the urinary tract without much pressure, but if there is any kind of obstruction in the urinary tract, then the pressure is high. If urine keeps accumulating in the kidney for a long time, then the size of the kidney starts increasing i.e. swelling starts. Due to the accumulation of urine for a long time, there is a lot of pressure on the kidney, in which case the kidney starts putting pressure on the surrounding organs. If it is not treated quickly, the kidney can stop working forever.

A common symptom of hydronephrosis is frequent urination or the urge to go. Other symptoms include:

• Stomach ache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Pain while urinating
• Bladder emptying
• Fever
  Lack of proper urine flow also increases the chances of urinary tract infection (UTI). This is the reason why UTI is one of the most prominent complications of hydronephrosis. Symptoms of UTI include:

1. Cloudy urine
2. Pain while urinating
3. Burning when urinating
4. Urinary incontinence
5. Back pain
6. Bladder pain
7. Fever
8. Feeling cold
   

CAUSES OF HYDRONEPHROSIS

• Hydronephrosis is not a disease, but can be caused by internal and external conditions that affect the kidneys and urinary collecting system.
• One of the main causes of hydronephrosis is acute unilateral obstructive uropathy. This is a sudden blockage in the tube (ureter) connecting the kidney to the bladder. Kidney stones are the main cause of this blockage, but scarring and blood clots can also cause acute unilateral obstructive uropathy.
• Due to the blockage of the ureter, urine goes back to the kidney instead of leaving the body, which causes swelling of the kidney. This way urine goes back into the kidney is called vesicoureteral reflux.

Other causes of blockages include:

• Tumors in the bladder, prostate gland, uterus, and other organs associated with the urinary tract also block urine flow.
• Enlargement of the prostate gland in men can put pressure on the urethra.
• The formation of a blood clot in the kidney or urethra also obstructs urination.
• Narrow texture of the urinary tract. This can be due to an infection, injury, surgery or congenital disorder.
• Kidney and urethra are also affected due to nerve and muscle problems.
• The enlargement of the uterus puts pressure on the urethra during pregnancy.
  

HOW IS HYDRONEPHROSIS DIAGNOSED?

• It is essential to diagnose it as early as possible, as long-term exposure to this condition can permanently damage the kidneys. The doctor will evaluate your overall health to diagnose and then focus on problems related to urination. He feels the swelling of the kidney by lightly massaging your abdomen and its surrounding area.
• Your doctor may use a catheter to drain some of the urine from the bladder. If a large amount of urine does not come out in this way, it means that there is a blockage in your bladder or urethra. The urethra is a tube through which urine exits the body.
• The doctor may also do an ultrasound or CT scan of the kidney to examine the swelling closely and locate the blockage area.
  

CAC TREATMENT FOR HYDRONEPHROSIS

5. Akik Pishti – Akik bhasma contains Silicon Dioxide and some herbal extracts derived into in during processing with Aloe vera and Rose water. It is used in General debility, Restlessness. It works well in loss of appetite, weight loss, and feeling of excessive heat in the body.

7. Sutshekhar Ras–It is an important medicine used in Ayurveda, which acts on Pitta dosha and reduces the symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, sour taste of mouth, restlessness, etc
