Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder which is characterized by abnormally low body weight and intense fear of gaining weight. It is a mental health problem which can lead to serious health repercussions. It often occurs in teenage or early adulthood. People suffering from anorexia nervosa restrict their diet for limiting their calorie intake. They get obsessed about losing weight so they do excessive exercise for it. After eating food, they either purge the food by using laxatives or do intentional vomiting. Anorexia nervosa involves physical as well as emotional challenges. It can be life-threatening also. The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is not known but it is believed to be due to some psychological and biological problems.
Some of the common signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa are:

Anorexia is called Aruchi in Ayurveda. It is a tridoshaj disorder in which all the doshas – vata, pitta and kapha are aggravated. Fear, anger and stress can also be the causes of aruchi. This leads to indigestion of food and ama or toxins get accumulated in body. It blocks the channels of gastrointestinal tract and a person loses sense of taste. In Ayurveda, there are herbs which increase digestive fire and dissolve ama. This increases appetite in the diseased person.
