What causes Tourette’s syndrome?
Turret has been linked to various parts of the brain including the basal ganglia region. Its function is to control body movements. This difference can affect the nerve cells and the chemical carrying the message between them. Doctors speculate that disturbances in this part of the brain network may lead to torate. It is not yet known what causes these problems in the brain, however, genes probably play a role. There can be other reasons for this. People who suffer from Turret have a higher chance of developing the disease in their family but, people in the same family may have different symptoms.
What causes increased risk of Tourette’s syndrome?
There are several risk factors for the syndrome, such as:
- Family history of the disorder: If someone in the family (blood relations) has Tourette’s syndrome or other tick related disorder, it increases the risk of the disorder in the family.
- Gender: Compared to women, the risk of this problem is three to four times higher in men.
