Sehjan (Drumstick) – Ayurvedic Properties & Medicinal Usage



Its wild trees are found in the Himalayan valleys.Pod of wild trees and cultivated trees are sweet and good for cooking. Based on the flower typs, Ayurved writers have identified its two main types- white and red. White variety is bitter and red variety is sweet in taste.The bitter variety is found all over but the sweet variety is found rarely.


Trees are small or medium sized. Its bark and wood soft. When the tree is laden with pod, the branches break off from the tree due to weight. Leaves grow in groups together. Leaf stalk is 1-2 inch long on which 5-8 pairs of leaves grow. Each leaf is ¼ to 2/3 inch long, oval shaped and grows opposite to each other . Flowers are bluish and grow in white coloured bunches. Pod is 5-17 inch long with prominent strips and are brown in colour. Seeds are triangularand bitter.


Paste of its bark and leaves causes burning sensation, cures oedema and swelling and is anti inflammatory. Nasya of its seed powder cures headache. Seed oil is used to relievepain and cures swelling and oedema. It excites nervous system. In internal use, it is purgative, promotes digestive function, and has binding properties. It is analgesic and is anthelmiintic. Sweet drumstick is unctuous and sweet. Being warm, it stimulates the heart, is a blood purifier and cures cough. Because of its bitterness and warmness, it stimulates liver.



Mix equal quantities of juice of its root and jiggery and give nasya of 1 drops of this mixture. It is beneficial in headache.


  1. Grind its leaves and tie the cake of the paste on the eyes. It cures conjunctivitis.
  2. Mix 40 gm juice of its leaves in 1 teaspoonful honey and apply this in the eyes as eyeliner. It cures corneal opacity and other eye disorders.
  3. In case of swelling of eye due to vata, pitta, kapha disorders and mental aberration, mix equal quantities of the juice of its leaves and honey and put 1 drops of each in the eyes. It cures eye pain and swelling.


In case of epilepsy and hysteria in women, give 15-20 gm decoction of its root, every morning and evening.


Mix equal quantities of juice of its root with juice of ginger and give 11-15 gm of this every morning and evening to the patient. It cures bronchial asthma.


  1. Grind equal quantities of its root, mustard and ginger and prepare tablets of 1 gm each. Give 1 tablet every morning and evening. It cures spleen and weakened state of digestive power.
  2. To cure the boils in mouth and throat, boil its 1 teaspoonful root in 300 ml water until water is reduced to ¼. Give this to the patient for gargles.


Mix 1 gm ginger root in 9 gm juice of its root and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It enhances the digestion power.


Mix 100 gm of its bark with 4 gm asafetida and 15 gm shunthi and grind them in water. Prepare tablets of 1 gm each. Give 1 tablet, 2-4 times a day. It cures swelling if the stomach caused by indigestion or accumulation of wind and stomach pain.


Prepare hot or cold infusion of its 40 gm root in 150 ml water and give this to the patient in small amounts. It causes excess urination and cures swelling.


Grind its bark in water and give 9 gm of this solution to the patient. It cures all types of swelling. Its bark is also known as Indian penicillin.


In case of pneumonia, muscular pain or stomach pain, apply the paste of its bark externally. It cures swelling and relieves pain. Its paste is beneficial in internal as well as in external swelling and pain.


Massage the affected area with its seed oil. It is beneficial in curing gout and joint pains.


Boil its 7-9 flowers in 200 ml milk and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It improves potency.


Mix and grind equal quantities of its leaves, ginger, turmeric, salt and black pepper and apply it on the swollen area.

Agastya (Sesbania grandiflora) – Ayurvedic Properties & Medicinal Usage

Sesbane plants are found almost everywhere. It grows well in areas which are abundant in water and have hot climate. During rainy season, the scattered seeds start germinating. As per Rajnighantu, sesbane has four varieties; white yellow, blue and red flowered. White flowered plants are most common of all the four. Parts of the plant like soft leaves, flowers and fruits are cooked and eaten.


Sesbane trees grow very fast but have a shorter life. Trees are 15 ft tall. Leaves are in bunches of 20-25 pairs arranged on a long thin spine. Each leaf is 1-1 ½ inch long, oval in shape. Flowers are white in colour and boat shaped. The fruits are 1 ft in length, slightly curved, and flat. Each fruit has 14-19 light colored seeds.


Sesbane tree parts are cool and bitter, they are beneficial in curing pitta kapha quartan fever, and dry cough. They also cure gastric disorders and cold. Flowers have a cooling effect, are mildly, and are mildly bitter, astringent, and pungent. They help cure rib disorders, fever, night- blindness, and many other diseases. Leaves are bitter but also mildly sweet, hard to digest, and slightly warm, they are beneficial in curing warm kapha, blood disorders, and cold. Fruits are bitter sweet and laxative. They enhance palate, intelligence, and memory. They cure disorders of the three humours, jaundice, depression, and stomach diseases.



  1. Take equal quantities of sesbane leaf powder and black pepper. Grind them with cow urine. Let the patient inhale this mixture.
  2. In case patient is a child, take extract of 1 sesbane leaves and mix half the quantity of black pepper in it. Dip a cotton flock in this mixture and place near the child nostril. It brings immediate relief.


Based on the side of the brain which is aching, drops 1-3 drops of sesbane leaf extract or flower extract on the opposite nostril. This brings immediate relief from headache as well as any pain I the nostrils.


In case of heaviness or headache due to cold, drop 1-4 drops of sesbane leaf extract in the nostrils. 10-156 gm of sesbane root extract with honey. 2-4 times a day, may be taken.

Eye problems:-

  1. 1 drops of sesbane flower extract in eyes. It clears the blurred vision.
  2. Cook its flowers as dish in the meals, morning and evening. It cures night blindness.
  3. Take 200 gm of sesbane leaves. Grind them and cook them in 1 kg medicated ghee. Give 4-9 gm of this ghee to the patient every morn-ing and evening. It is extremely beneficial in curing eye problems.
  4. Put a few drops of honey which exude out of the sesbane flowers. It helps cure blurred vision. When the flowers are plucked, 1-3 drops of honey exudes out of it.
  5. Roast the flowers in ghee and take it regularly. It helps cure blurredness of vision and other eye problems.


Take sesbane leaf extract and mix equal quantities of ginger root, peeper and jiggery. Give 1-2 drops for inhalation.

Dryness and cough related problems:-

Prepare sesbane leaf decoction. Use it for gargles. It cures dry cough, scaling of tongue and helps release of cough. Also beneficial in curing husfy voice.

Abdominal/ Stomach pain:-

In 15 gm decoction of sesbane bark, add a little amount of rock salt and 18 roasted cloves. Give this mixture to the patient every morning and evening. Within 2 days it cures all types of abdominal illness and pain.

White leucorrhea:-

Take fresh bark and grind it to extract its juice. Take a piece of cotton and soak it in the bark juice and then place it in the vaginal area. It gives relief in white leucorrhea and also relieves in itching.


Take dhatura root and sesbane root in equal quantities and grind them. Prepare a and tie it on the aching area. It cures the pain and reduces the swelling. In case of lesser pain, apply paste of red sesbane root.


Take dried flowers and grind them to from a fine powder. Mix 99 gm powder in 1 litre of buffalo milk and ferment it to form curd. Next day prepare butter from the curd and use this butter for massage.

Peela Dhatura – Ayurvedic Properties & Medicinal Usage



It is an American herb but is found all over Indian now. When any part of this herb is plucked, it exudes golden colored, yellowish milk. This is why it is named as swarnkshiri (plant with golden liquid).Fruit is quadrangular. It is thorny and cup shaped which contains two small, dark colored mustard like seeds, which when put on burning coal, start roasting with cracking sound. The whole plant has thorns like those in yellow- berried night shade plant.


It cures Kapha and Pitta. Its milk, juice of leaves and seed oil is used to cleanse and heal ulcers and wound and is anthelmintic. Paste of root cures swelling and oedema and is anti-toxin. Seeds relieve pain. Its root and seed oil is purgative. Root juice is blood purifier and milk cures swelling and oedema.Root and its milk also cures high fever. Decoction of the whole plant is anthelmintic and anti-dermatoses. Yellow milk cleanses urine, is anti- dermatoses, cleanses and heals ulcers and wound, cures swelling and oedema and is anti-pyretic.



  1. Mix 1 drops of its milk with 2 drops of ghee and applies this mixture as eyeliner in eyes. It cures dryness of eyes, glaucoma and blindness.
  2. Take 1 gm of its extract and mix it in 40 gm rose water. Put 1 drops of this solution twice a day. It cures swelling of eyes, redness of eyes, haziness of vision, and other ophthalmic disorders.
  3. Put 1 drops of the juice of its leaves in both the eyes. It is also beneficial in curing eye disorders.


Give ½ to to 1 gm powder of its root with warm water or milk, every morning and evening. It helps release the phlegm. Or give 3-4 drops of its yellow milk with sugar.


  1. Take 400 ml juice of its whole plant and boil it. When it thickens, add 50 gm jiggery and 15 gm resin in it. Mix them all and prepare tablets of 200 mg each.Give1 tablet with warm water, thrice a day. It gives considerable relief in asthma.
  2. Prepare decoction of its leaves. Add equal amount of benzoic acid in it and prepare gram- sized tablet. Give 1 tablet, thrice days to the patient. It gives relief to the patient.


Give 1 gm of it twice a day with milk.


Mix 2-4 ml its yellow milk with 9 gm ghee and give this to the patient. It cures stomach pain.


Its oil is purgative and laxative. But it does not have a similar effect on everyone. In some, it may cause2-3 stools while in others it may cause 14 -15, but even if the patient vomits at the start of the treatment, it does not cause weakness.


In case of burning sensation in urinary tract, soak its 15 gm whole plant 150 ml water and prepare its cold or hot infusion. Give this to the patient. It causes excessive urination and cures the burning sensation in urinary tract.


Mix 7-9 drops of its oil in 9 gm tinospora juice and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures jaundice.


Give25 drops of its oil with 1 gm ginger root. It cures the pain.


  1. Give 4-9 gm of its whole plant, 2-4 times a day. It causes excessive urination and helps release the obstructed water.
  2. Mix 2- 3 gm salt in 4-7 drops of its oil and give this to the patient.


Mix 4 gm juice of its whole plant in milk and give this to the patient, thrice a day. Also, apply its milk on the boils.


Take 1-4 ml of its yellow milk and give this to the patient with butter and kidamari or give 4 ml juice of its leaves with 9 gm ghee, 1-2 times a day. It cures gonorrhea.


Take 1 gm of its bark and heat it with milk of banyan tree.Prepare gram- sized tablets. Give one tablet every morning and evening with betel leaf, for 13 days. It cures impotency.


Apply the juice of its leaves or its oil on the affected area.


Apply its milk on the ulcers. It heals even the severe and incurable ulcers.

Bach, Vacha (Acorus calamus) – Properties & Medicinal Usage

Bach, Vacha, Acorus calamus


It is a native of Europe and central Asia. There is no reference available to state that how this plant spread to the Indian soil. Today, its plants are found in Himalayan region at the height of 6000ft. It is commonly found in Manipur and Naga hills and in the lakes of Kashmir, and around the farms. Its dried root or stem is sold in markets with the name of Gboda bach. It many varieties are found. BAL Bach or parseek bacha is the main one.


Its 1-2 ft tall, soft plants are found near water bodies, around the clay soil.Leaves are 1-3 ft long and ½ to 1 inch wide, green in colour with wavering edges. Flowers are small, white and dense. Fruits contain many seeds and are pulpy. Its root or the underground stem, like ginger, is spread in the ground. It is thick like middle finger with 4- 4 mounts, round and wrinkled surface. It is fragrant and hariy and is brown in colour. It leaves are also fragrant. The plant which has strong smell is considered to be of the supreme quality.


It has strong smell and is hot and pungent. It causes vomiting and improves the body fire. It purifies urinary system and has binding properties. It cures swelling of the stomach caused by indigestion or accumulation of wind, shool, epilepsy, cough , anxiety, and insect bite. It is antipyrectic and strengthens heart. It is beneficial for throat and cures bronchitis and bronchial asthma.


Its properties are also similar to bach. It is mainly vata related diseases.



  1. Give its powder along with powder of peepal to be inhaled. It cures Suryavrat .
  2. In case of headache , apply the paste of its whole plant on the painful area.
  3. Grind it in water and apply the paste on the forehead. It cures headach.


  1. Give 200 mg powder of its bark with water or   ghee or milk, twice a day for 1 year or atleast 1 month. It enhances the memory powder of the person.
  2. Cook its 5 gm powder with 200 gm powdered sugar and give 5gm of it every morning and evening. It cures the forgetfulness in the person.


Mix its 400 mg powder in milk and give this to the patient thrice a day. It releases the congestion due to deposited phlegm and also cures the throat pain.


Give its powder with peepal powder mixed with honey or Neem oil to be inhaled. It cures the throat pain.


Give 250 mg to ½ gm of its powder sieved through a fine cloth with honey, every morning and evening. It is beneficial in anxiety and epilepsy.


  1. In case of cough in children, grind it in mother’s milk and give this to the patient.
  2. In case of cough in children, grind 120 mg of it in water and give this thrice a day.
  3. Keep its powder in a cloth and let the patient inhale. It cures chornic rhinitis.
  4. In case of asthma patients, to start with , give only 1gm of it and then after every 2 hours, give   500mg of it.


Mix 120 mg ash of its coal in water and give this to the patient.It cures diarrhea in children.


Mix 1 gm of its powder with 80mg roasted asfoetida and give this to the patient. It kills the worms in stomach.


  1. Grind it in water and apply the paste on nose. It cures cough and the accompanying fever.

Ankol (Alangium Salvifolium) – Medicinal Usage, Properties & Harmful Effects



Tiebid Alu retis is found as small as well as tall, big trees which grow typically in forests or dry and high land areas. These are found in Himalayan valley, Utter Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal, Rajasthan, South Indian and Burma.


Its tree is 5-15ft tall. Trunk is thick and round, bark is brown in colour. Leaves are 2-3inch long, alternate and are found in different shapes. With onset of summer season, leafless trees start bearing flowers. Flowers are white or yellowish white in color. These are about an inch long and grow single flowers or in bunch. Calyx of the flower is soft, velvety, and porous. Flowers have a nice fragrance. Fruits are round or oval in shape with single compartment. Seeds are large and sticky.


It is purgative and anthelmintic in nature. It is beneficial in curing pain and swelling. It has a binding nature and cures erysipelas, cough, pitta, blood disorders. It also helps in curing the effect of snake and mouse bite.


Fruit is cool, tasty and heavy. It is purgative, promotes physical strength, and cures vata pitta and burning sensation. It is also beneficial in curing chest problems.


Seeds are cool, tasty, heavy, sweet and unctuous. They promote physical strength, and eradicate burning sensation, cold, cough.



Give 1 ½ 3 gm of its root powder, morning and evening to the patient. It helps cure liver function and benefits in as cites.


Rub the root in lemon juice to from a thick paste. Give ½ teaspoonful of this paste to the patient 2 hours before meals. It shows magical results.


Prepare decoction of its 3gm root and give to the patient. It causes complete release of urine and relieves the patient.


Take 7gm of fruit pulp and mix with 1teaspoonful honey. Give this mixture with rice water in morning, afternoon and evening. It helps cure diarrhea.


Take 2gm powder of root of white flowered tiebid plant. Give this powder orally to the patient. It helps release of vomit without any difficulty.


Give 375 mg powder of its root orally to the patient. It cures constipation.


Give 1-3gm of the root powder two times a day. It causes sweating which immediately controls the seasonal fever and the body temperature becomes normal.


  1. Take 2gm powder of tie bid root and mix with 1 gm dry ginger powder and cook in rice water. Give this solution to the patient. It is beneficial in curing dengue fever and also in influenza.
  2. During fever, heat its leaves and tie on the painful area.


  1. Grind its fruit in water and apply the paste on the body. It cures the pain during fever.
  2. Grind its root and ginger root in water and apply the paste on the body. It cures the pain during fever.


Take 1-2 gm powder of its fruits. Give this to the patient orally and then give its decoction kept overnight. Give this treatment regularly.


  1. Take 4 gm powder of its fruits and 9 gm sugar candy. Grind then and give to the patient. This helps control the bleeding.
  2. Cook  the bark of its root in oil and medicate it. Apply this oil on the painful area. It cures the severe pain in arthritis.


In case of a cut by a sharp object, soak a piece of cotton in the tie bid seed oil and apply on the cut. It immediately stops bleeding.


Prepare paste of its roots bark and apply on the skin. It cures all types of skin problems.


In case of blocked knot of nerves, rub its root with water and apply the paste on the blocked knot. It brings immediate relief.


In case of a spider bite, rub its root with water and apply the paste on the bitten area or mix mustard oil in the paste and put a few drops in the ears.


Rub its root with water and give this mixture to the patient 1-2 times. It neutralizes the poison.


Take 12 gm root and prepare its decoction in 2 liter water. Strain the solution and at an interval of 10 minutes, give 40 gm decoction with 40 gm heated ghee to the patient. It causes vomiting and stools which eliminate the poison from the body. This helps in mellowing down the impact of poison. After this, prepare decoction of neem inner bark and add 1 gm tie bid root powder in it. Give this decoction to the patient.


Its usage in excess quantities is harmful.
