Herbal Remedies for Jaundice, Ayurvedic Treatment – Causes & Symptoms

 

Jaundice is defined as the condition where in the eyes and skin takes the yellow tint. It is a common liver disorder affecting almost all the people at some point of time in their life. Sometimes it is also seen as a symptom of other liver disorders such as liver infection, gallstones and cirrhosis of liver or when some poisonous substances get ingested into the body which cannot be dealt by the liver. Jaundice is also caused when the liver gets inflamed. This is known as hepatitis.

The yellow colour first appears in the white portion of the eyes and then slowly it spreads to other portions of the body. The yellow colour of the skin is mainly due to excess of bile pigment namely bilirubin circulating in the blood. As a result the liver is not able to function properly and digest the fat.

CAUSES

  • Due to any obstruction in the bile duct due to gallstones or hepatitis
  • Impairment of the functions of the liver
  • Excessive destruction of the red blood cells
  • Excessive circulation of the bile pigments in the blood
  • Ailments like typhoid, malaria, yellow fever, haemolytic anaemia and tuberculosis also affect the functioning of the liver
  • Due to certain viral infections

In Ayurveda, jaundice is compared with Kamala. It is a condition in which the skin gets discoloured. This happens because there is deposition of the bile pigment in the deeper layers of the skin.

There are two types of kamala defined in ayurveda:

  1. Shakaashrita Kamala – This type of kamala is caused due to obstruction in the bile duct. The obstruction could be due to gallstones or any cancerous growth that causes the blockage.
  2. Koshthashrita Kamala – This type of kamala is caused due to accumulation of bile pigments due to any liver disease.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

  • Maintain personal and public hygiene
  • Wash your hands before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
  • Drink purified water.
  • Avoid eating hot, spicy, oily, fried and heavy food stuffs.
  • Avoid refined flour, polished rice, preserved foods and bakery products.
  • Carrot juice, beetroot juice mixed with lemon, juice of radish, juice of bitter gourd, lemon juice and sugarcane juice are highly beneficial for people suffering from jaundice. This enhances urination which helps in eliminating excess of bile pigments in the blood.
  • Increase the intake of minerals like iron and calcium in your diet.
  • Have boiled and spice less diet.
  • Prefer eating radish leaves, tomato, lemon, dried dates, almonds and cardamoms.
  • Take complete rest. Avoid taking mental stress and tensions.
  • Practice yogasanas like matsyasana, sarvanga asana and baddha Padma asana.

HERBAL REMEDIES

  • Take 4-5 tomatoes and boil them in 500 ml water for 15 minutes. De-skin and crush the boiled tomatoes. Press them on a sieve and extract the juice. Drink this juice every morning on an empty stomach.
  • Take 7 almonds, 2 dried dates, 3 small cardamoms. Soak them in water overnight and crush them next morning to make a fine paste. Now add two teaspoons sugar and one teaspoon butter. Mix well and eat once a day.
  • Add two teaspoons of turmeric in one glass of water. Drink this mixture two to three times a day.
  • Take a glass of buttermilk with some black pepper in it. Take this for a period of seven days in case of jaundice.

Aloe Vera (Ghritkumari) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

INTRODUCTION

Aloe Vera (Ghritkumari) is found all over India. Generally, it is grown in pots in houses.

APPEARANCE

The plant does not contain a stem. Thick, muscular leaves grow directly from root from all sides. Leaves are 2-4 ft long and 3 inch wide. The margins have small thorns which gives it a look of a chisel. From the center of the leaves grows a long flower pod in which grow red flowers. Plant bears flowers in winter season.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Its extract contains glucosides. The main component alone is light yellow coloured glucoside, called barbiloine. In addition, it contains a resin and fragrant oil.

PROPERTIES

It is heavy in digestion, unctuous, sticky, pungent, cooling and bitter. It is dry, sour and warm. It is purgative, and beneficial for eyes, is a rejuvenator, and sweet. Its promotes physical strength, improves potency and cures vata, poisonous flatulence, liver disorders, spleen disorders, semen production, cough, fever and cyst. It is beneficial in curing burns. It cures pitta, blood disorders and skin disorders.

MEDICINAL USAGE & BENEFITS

Headache:-

Take pulp of Indian aloe and add little amount of powder of darubaldi on it. Heat the pulp slightly and apply on the painful area. It cures vata and kapha related headache.

Alopecia

Take the pulp of Red Indian aloe (plant which bears orange or red coloured flowers). Dilute it in spirit and apply the paste on hair. It turns the hair black. When applied on bald head, it promotes hair growth.

Eye Disorders

  1. Apply the pulp of Indian aloe on eyes. It cures the redness of eyes and reduces the heat of eyes. It is also beneficial in viral conjunctivitis.
  2. Take its 2 gm pulp and add 380 mg poppy in it. Tie this mixture in a piece of clout. Dip this cloth in water and apply the cloth on the eyes. Aloe put 2-3 drops of this mixture in the eyes. It cures pain in eyes.
  3. Mix a little amount of turmeric in its pulp and warm it slightly. Tie this mixture on the eyes. It cures pain in eyes.

Otalgia:-

In case of pain in one ear, put 3 drops of warm juice of Indian aloe in the opposite ear. It cures the ear pain.

Ear Worms:-

In case of worms in ears due to excessive heart, grind Indian aloe in water and put 3 drops each in the ears. It kills the worms in ears.

Bronchitis:-

Prepare ash (bhasma) of its pulp and saindhava and evening to the patient. It cures bronchitis and severe bronchitis and also cure bronchitis due to kaphaja.

Flatulence:-

Take 5 gm of its pulp, 7 gm cow ghee, 2 gm Haritaki powder and 2 gm rock salt. Mix them all and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures flatulence.

Gastric Tumor:-

Tie its pulp on the stomach. It dissolves the stomach tumour. It softens the hard cures

Stomach Pain:-

Grind 15-20 gm of Indian aloe root and then boil it. Strain the solution, sprinkle a little amount of roasted asfoetida on it and give this to the patient. It cures stomach pain.

Bleeding Piles:-

Mix 60 gm pulp of Indian aloe with 3 gm grinded geru. Prepare its cake. Place it on a piece of cotton and them place the cotton on the anus region and then tie it with cloth. It cures the pain and burning sensation in the boils. The boils shrink and get cured. This treatment is useful in bleeding piles also.

Jaundice:-

  1. Give 20-30 ml juice of Indian aloe,3-5 times a day. It cures disorders of pitta. It cures yellowness of eyes and also cures constipation. Its juice can be given to the patient as nasya to inhale through nose and cures nasal disorders.
  2. Give 4-7 gm of its juice with butter milk. It cures spleen and liver enlargement, flatulence pain and also cures any disorders of digestive system. Take off the pulp from its leaves and fill the peel of leaves in an earthen pot and add a little amount of salt in it. Close the mouth of the pot and cook it on fire. When the internal material burns completely and turns black, grind it into a fine powder and store it in a bottle. This powder is used as medicine.

Vasaka (Malabar Nut, Adhatoda Vasica) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

INTRODUCTION

In India, Malabar nut (Adhatoda Vasica, Vasaka) plants are found at heights of 1300 to 4000 ft. They grow wild in stony and rocky soil along with other bushes.

APPEARANCE

Its stem is very small and the plant stares growing and spreading just above the ground. Leaves are 3-9 inch long, hariry with edges curling towards each other, pointed at the ends. Flowers are white in cool and blossom in February- march in 4-6 inch long clusters.

PROPERTIES

Malabar nut creates vata. It is very beneficial for voice and cures heart, palpitations, kapha, pitta, blood disorders, thirst, bronchial asthma, cough, fever, vomiting, urinary diseases, dermatoses and tuberculosis. It is effective on respiratory system. It dilutes the phlegm and helps in its release from the body. It also helps the functioning of respiratory passages. It inflates the air passages which helps the asthmatic patient to breath air easily and relieves gasping. It also controls haemoptysis. It cures bronchitis, is beneficial for throat and cures bronchial asthma.

MEDICINAL USAGE & BENEFITS

HEADACHE:-

Dry flowers of Malabar nut in shade and then grind them into fine powder. Take 5gm of this powder, mix jiggery and prepare 2doses. As soon as the headache begins, give 1 dose to the patient. It gives immediate relief.

HEAD RELATED DISORDERS:-

  1. Grind its 10gm root in 100gm milk and then strain the milk. Add 20gm sugar candy in it along with powder of 1o black peppers. Give this to the patient. It cures eye disorders, pain in eyes, hiccoughs, and cough etc disorders.
  2. Prepare tea of its shade dried leaves and give this to the patient. It cures headache and any other related disorders. For taste, add a little amount of salt in this tea.

EYE DISORDERS:-

Heat 1-3 flowers and then tie them on the eyes. It cures inflammation of the retina of eyes.

COUGH:-

  1. Give 6.5 gm juice of is fresh leaves with honey to the patient. It is beneficial in old cough, bronchial asthma and tuberculosis.
  2. Give 5-10gm decoction of Malabar nut, muunakka and sugar candy, 2-3 times a day. It cures old cough.

SELF-TESTED USE BY OF SWAMI RAMDEV JI:-

Give 1 teaspoonful juice of its leaves with 1 teaspoonful ginger juice and 1 teaspoonful honey. It cures all types of cough.

TUBERCULOSIS: –

Give 30-40 gm decoction of its leaves with 2 gm powder of pippali mixed in it. It cures severe bronchitis, bronchial asthma and tuberculosis.

KIDNEY PAIN: –

Heat its leaves along with leaves of neem and apply them near the belly button area. Also give 6 gm juice of Malabar nut leaves with 6 gm of honey mixed in it. It gives relief from intense pain in kidneys.

DIARRHOEA:-

Give 20-30 gm juice of its leaves, 4-6 times a day. It is beneficial in bleeding diarrhea.

REGULARISATION OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE: –

Its leaves control menstrual cycle. Take 20 gm of its leaves and 7 gm each of seeds of carrot and radish. Cook them all in ½ kg water till water is reduced to ¼. Give this decoction to the patient to drink. Continue this treatment for a few days.

URINARY PROBLEMS:-

Take equal amounts of seeds of melon and leaves of Malabar nut. Grind them well and give this to the patient to drink. It causes effortless urination.

BURNING SENSATION DURING URINATION: –

Flowers of Malabar nut eradicate tuberculosis and burning sensation. It also reduces the heat of blood.Soak 8-11 flowers in a glass of water over night and next day morning crush the flowers, strain the solution and give this to the patient. It cures burning sensation during urination and also cures the redness.

SPERMATORRHOEA:-

Grind its dried flowers and sieve and give this to the patient along with sugar syrup and cucumber. It cures spermatorrhoea.

ASCITES: –

In cases of ascites and when the whole body turns white, give 15-25 gm juice if its leaves, 3-6 times a day. Increases the urination and then cures the disorder.

LEUCORRHOEA:-

Take juice of 15 gm of Malabar nut leaves with 2 teaspoonful honey, every morning and evening. It cures leucorrhoea.

JAUNDICE:-

Give 15 ml juice of its whole plant with equal amounts of honey and sugar candy mixed in it. Give this to the patient, it cures jaundice completely.

PILES:-

Take equal quantities of its leaves and white sandalwood. Grind them together to form, a fine powder. Give 4 gm of this powder to the patient, every morning and evening. It is very beneficial in case of bleeding piles and also controls bleeding from the boils. In case of swelling in piles, take steam of its decoction.

FEVER:-

Take equal quantities of leaves of Malabar nut and Indian gooseberry. Grind them solid and soak them in an earthen vessel in the evening. Next day morning, grind the solution and extract the juice. Mix 15 gm sugar candy in this juice and give this to the patient.

Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

INTRODUTION

Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia) tiny plants grow naturally in the rainy season all over India. In many places they are also cultivated. Typically plants have a life of one year but with due care they can survive for 5-7 years. For medicinal purpose its seeds, and the oils extracted from the seeds are used. Plants bear flowers in winter and the flowers turn into fruits in summer.

APPEARANCE

The plants are 2- 7 ft. tall, straight and soft. The branches are relatively hard and have knots. The leaves are normal with a mid-vein and are 3-5 inch long and round. They are oily and have black spots on the upper and lower surfaces. The flowers are bluish which grow from a light purple joint of the leaf and the main stem.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

The seeds have a volatile oil, a resin, a stable oil and two crystalline chemicals known as psoralen. The peel of fruit contains psoralidin chemical. Its anti-dermatoses and anthelmintic properties are due to these two chemicals only.

PROPERTIES

It is sweet, bitter and pungent when cooked. It is a purgative, cool, tasty and dry in nature. It is beneficial for curing heart related problems and cough, bleeding diathesis, bronchial asthma, dermatoses, urinary disorders, fever and is anthelmintic. Fruits enhance pitta and are beneficial for hair and skin.

MEDICINAL USAGE & BENEFITS

TOOTH INFECTION:-

Grind its root to form a paste and add a little amount of roasted alum in it. Use the mixture to brush the teeth every morning and evening. It cures any infection in the teeth.

BRONCHIAL ASTHMA:-

Take ½ gm. seed powder with ginger juice, 4-7 times a day. It gives relief from cough. The phlegm loosens and is easily released.

DIARRHOEA:-

Cook and eat the leaves, every morning and evening regularly for a few weeks.

JAUNDICE:-

Take 20 ml juice of spreading hogweed, ½ gm psoralea seeds powder and mix them well. Give this mixture to the patient every morning and evening.

PILES:-

Take 3 gm harad, 3 gm ginger root and 1 gm psoralea seeds. Grind them all. Give ½ teaspoonful of this mixture with jiggery every morning and evening.

STERILITY, INFERTILITY:-

After the menstrual cycle is complete, grind the seeds in oil and apply in the vagina. It reduces the potential for conceiving.

DERMATOSES:

  1. Take 5 parts of psoralea seeds, 1 part arsenic sulphide. Grind them all in cow urine and apply the paste on the white patches. It cures white patches.
  2. Take equal quantities of psoralea seeds and ringworm plant, and grind them in vinegar. Apply this paste on white patches.
  3. Grind equal quantities of psoralea seeds, sulphur, and gudmar. Soak 13 gm of this powder in water overnight . Next day morning, strain the solution and give to the patient. Apply the sediment part on white patches. It cures leucoderma.
  4. Take 2 parts psoralea seeds oil, 2 parts turak oil and 1 part sandalwood mix them and apply. It cures skin problems and leucoderma.
  5. Take 1gm psoralea seeds powder and 100 ml decoction of Indian gooseberry or kbair. Give these together to the patient it cures vitiligo.
  6. Soak psoralea seeds in curd for 3 days and then let it dry. Extract its oil and store in a bottle mix nausadar in it and apply on patches.
  7. Take equal quantities of psoralea of psoralea seeds, kalaunji and poppy seeds and grind them with madar leaf extract apply this paste on white patches
  8. Take equal quantities of amounts of psoralea seeds, tamarind, borax and anjeer roots. Grind them with water and apply the paste on white patehes it cures vitiligo.
  9. Take equal quantities of psoralea seeds, ringworm plant, and geru. Grind them and kbaral with ginger juice. Apply it on white patches and let dry in the sun it cures leucoderma.
  10. Take equal quantities of psoralea seeds, geru and gandhak. Grind them and kharal with ginger juice. Prepare tablets of 15 gm each. Soak 2 tablet in 35 ml water at night. Next day, give this solution to the patient, followed by fresh water.
  11. Take equal quantities of psoralea seeds, celery seeds, ringworm plant seeds, and lotus stem. Grind them and mix with honey. Prepare small tablets. Give 2 tablet in the morning with decoction of anjeer root.
  12. Take 2 gm pure psoralea seeds, 3 gm sesame seeds, and 3 teaspoonful honeys. Give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures vitiligo (white patches).
  13. Take 150 gm psoralea seeds, 30 gm geru and 60 gm ringworm plant seeds. Grind them all and sieve through a soft cloth. Store the powder in a cloth and dry over the fumes of extract of trailing eclipta alba. Store this powder and every morning and evening take little amount with cow urine and apply.
  14. Take 2 parts psoralea seeds, 1 part each of neela thotha and borax. Grind them and sieve through fine cloth. Mix it with trailing eclipta juice and keep it for a week. Mix lemon juice in it and apply. It cures white patches. This treatment is quite bitter for skin. In case of acne or boils, stop this treatment.
