Herbal Remedies for Hyperthyroidism, Ayurvedic Treatment – Causes & Symptoms

Thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland which is situated in front of the neck. It is one of the most important endocrine glands in the body. It is an extremely sensitive and easily responds to stress and stimuli. Its major function is to produce hormones which are responsible for metabolism of the body. It produces a hormone called thyroxine which plays a very important role in regulating the metabolism of the body. When this hormone is secreted in excess, the condition is known as exophthalamic goitre or thyrotoxicosis or hyperthyroidism. The disease is common in people between 20 and 40 years of age. The incidence is higher in females as compared to males.

Hyperthyroidism is a metabolic disorder, characterized by the excessive production of thyroxin by the thyroid gland. Goitre may also be present.

  • Include milk, ghee and milk products in your diet.
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables like banana, melons, apples etc.
  • Practise yoga and pranayama. Ujjayi pranayama and Shitali breath are recommended for hyperthyroidism.
  • Practice of Sarvangasana is also recommended in thyroid. After Sarvangasana, practice matsyasana and halasana. All these practices positively result in better health of the thyroid gland.
  • Include diet containing minerals such as zinc, copper and calcium.
  • Consume natural sources of iodine such as watercress, sea weeds etc.
  • Eat pitta and kapha balancing diet.
  • Old rice, barley, moong dal, Bengal gram, cucumber are good for people suffering from hyperthyroidism.
  • Coconut water or application of coconut oil over body has good results in case of hyperthyroidism.
  • Avoid eating processed food stuffs.
  • Include ginger in your diet as ginger has anti inflammatory properties in it that help in boosting the immunity.


  • Mix in equal quantity the juices of cabbage, spinach, mustard greens and radishes. Drink one cup of this juice once daily.
  • Take 10 grams of dhania seeds and add it to a glass of water. Boil and allow it to cool. Strain the mixture and take two times a day.
  • Mix long pepper, black pepper and dry ginger powder in equal quantities. Consume half teaspoon of this powder two times a day with lukewarm water.
  • Prepare a fine paste of the vegetable jalakumbhi and apply it over the affected area to reduce the swelling.
  • Jalakumbhi is also rich in iodine. Consume its juice in the dose of 10-20 ml a day. This is highly beneficial in case of hyperthyroidism.
