Herbal Remedies for Headache, Ayurvedic Treatment – Causes & Symptoms

Headache is defined as the pain in and around the head and neck. Headache is a symptom rather than disease. Headaches are characterized by a feeling of tenseness in the neck, shoulder and scalp.

According to Ayurveda, headache is compared with Shirhashoola. It is caused due to vitiation of vata and kapha dosha in the body. When vata dosha gets obstructed by the kapha dosha in the head, it causes headache. As the pain increases in its intensity, pitta dosha also gets imbalanced and hence causes burning sensation in the head along with nausea and vomiting.

It is believed that the headache is caused due to two main reasons. One is impaired digestion and the cause is sensitive nervous system. Improper diet leads to the aggravation of the pitta dosha. The aggravated pitta dosha leads to the production of toxins in the body which is known as ama in ayurveda. This ama dosha then starts getting accumulated in the manovahi srotas and hence causes headache.

  • Avoid taking tea, coffee, cold drinks and other caffeinated beverages.
  • Baked foods, dairy foods, heavy to digest non veg foods, processed and fermented foods should be strictly avoided.
  • Have warm and easily digestible foods
  • Have boiled and steemed vegetables, soups, vegetable juices.
  • 5-6 almonds or walnuts and some raisins can be eaten every day.
  • Eat fruits like apples, papayas, mangoes, grapes and pears.
  • Buttermilk is highly beneficial in case of headache.
  • Avoid working for long hours continuously
  • Avoid exposure towards hot and cold weather.
  • Perform simple exercises to reduce the intensity of headache. Move your chin upwards and downwards, left and right and bend the neck sideways towards each shoulder by turns. These exercises cause the relaxation of the muscles and hence reduces the pain.


  • Take one cup of warm water and add a green tea bag to it. Squeeze half a lemon and mix well. Drink this for instant relief.
  • Separate the outer covering of 2-3 lemons. Chop and crush the lemon’s outer covering to make a paste. Apply this paste on the forehead for quick relief from the headache.
  • Take two tablespoon of cinnamon powder and add water to prepare its paste. Mix well and apply on the forehead for relieving headache.
  • Take one glass of watermelon juice and mix one teaspoon sugar in it. Have this mixture. This is helpful in relieving headaches caused due to heat.
  • Prepare a paste of sandal wood and mix it with rose water and apply this over the forehead.
  • Grind 10-12 grains of black pepper and 10-12 grains of rice with water to make a paste. Apply this paste on the area where it pains.
  • Mix one fourth teaspoon of clove powder with one teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply this paste on the affected area for 15-20 minutes.

Aloe Vera (Ghritkumari) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties


Aloe Vera (Ghritkumari) is found all over India. Generally, it is grown in pots in houses.


The plant does not contain a stem. Thick, muscular leaves grow directly from root from all sides. Leaves are 2-4 ft long and 3 inch wide. The margins have small thorns which gives it a look of a chisel. From the center of the leaves grows a long flower pod in which grow red flowers. Plant bears flowers in winter season.


Its extract contains glucosides. The main component alone is light yellow coloured glucoside, called barbiloine. In addition, it contains a resin and fragrant oil.


It is heavy in digestion, unctuous, sticky, pungent, cooling and bitter. It is dry, sour and warm. It is purgative, and beneficial for eyes, is a rejuvenator, and sweet. Its promotes physical strength, improves potency and cures vata, poisonous flatulence, liver disorders, spleen disorders, semen production, cough, fever and cyst. It is beneficial in curing burns. It cures pitta, blood disorders and skin disorders.



Take pulp of Indian aloe and add little amount of powder of darubaldi on it. Heat the pulp slightly and apply on the painful area. It cures vata and kapha related headache.


Take the pulp of Red Indian aloe (plant which bears orange or red coloured flowers). Dilute it in spirit and apply the paste on hair. It turns the hair black. When applied on bald head, it promotes hair growth.

Eye Disorders

  1. Apply the pulp of Indian aloe on eyes. It cures the redness of eyes and reduces the heat of eyes. It is also beneficial in viral conjunctivitis.
  2. Take its 2 gm pulp and add 380 mg poppy in it. Tie this mixture in a piece of clout. Dip this cloth in water and apply the cloth on the eyes. Aloe put 2-3 drops of this mixture in the eyes. It cures pain in eyes.
  3. Mix a little amount of turmeric in its pulp and warm it slightly. Tie this mixture on the eyes. It cures pain in eyes.


In case of pain in one ear, put 3 drops of warm juice of Indian aloe in the opposite ear. It cures the ear pain.

Ear Worms:-

In case of worms in ears due to excessive heart, grind Indian aloe in water and put 3 drops each in the ears. It kills the worms in ears.


Prepare ash (bhasma) of its pulp and saindhava and evening to the patient. It cures bronchitis and severe bronchitis and also cure bronchitis due to kaphaja.


Take 5 gm of its pulp, 7 gm cow ghee, 2 gm Haritaki powder and 2 gm rock salt. Mix them all and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures flatulence.

Gastric Tumor:-

Tie its pulp on the stomach. It dissolves the stomach tumour. It softens the hard cures

Stomach Pain:-

Grind 15-20 gm of Indian aloe root and then boil it. Strain the solution, sprinkle a little amount of roasted asfoetida on it and give this to the patient. It cures stomach pain.

Bleeding Piles:-

Mix 60 gm pulp of Indian aloe with 3 gm grinded geru. Prepare its cake. Place it on a piece of cotton and them place the cotton on the anus region and then tie it with cloth. It cures the pain and burning sensation in the boils. The boils shrink and get cured. This treatment is useful in bleeding piles also.


  1. Give 20-30 ml juice of Indian aloe,3-5 times a day. It cures disorders of pitta. It cures yellowness of eyes and also cures constipation. Its juice can be given to the patient as nasya to inhale through nose and cures nasal disorders.
  2. Give 4-7 gm of its juice with butter milk. It cures spleen and liver enlargement, flatulence pain and also cures any disorders of digestive system. Take off the pulp from its leaves and fill the peel of leaves in an earthen pot and add a little amount of salt in it. Close the mouth of the pot and cook it on fire. When the internal material burns completely and turns black, grind it into a fine powder and store it in a bottle. This powder is used as medicine.

Vasaka (Malabar Nut, Adhatoda Vasica) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

In India, Malabar nut (Adhatoda Vasica, Vasaka) plants are found at heights of 1300 to 4000 ft. They grow wild in stony and rocky soil along with other bushes.


Its stem is very small and the plant stares growing and spreading just above the ground. Leaves are 3-9 inch long, hariry with edges curling towards each other, pointed at the ends. Flowers are white in cool and blossom in February- march in 4-6 inch long clusters.


Malabar nut creates vata. It is very beneficial for voice and cures heart, palpitations, kapha, pitta, blood disorders, thirst, bronchial asthma, cough, fever, vomiting, urinary diseases, dermatoses and tuberculosis. It is effective on respiratory system. It dilutes the phlegm and helps in its release from the body. It also helps the functioning of respiratory passages. It inflates the air passages which helps the asthmatic patient to breath air easily and relieves gasping. It also controls haemoptysis. It cures bronchitis, is beneficial for throat and cures bronchial asthma.



Dry flowers of Malabar nut in shade and then grind them into fine powder. Take 5gm of this powder, mix jiggery and prepare 2doses. As soon as the headache begins, give 1 dose to the patient. It gives immediate relief.


  1. Grind its 10gm root in 100gm milk and then strain the milk. Add 20gm sugar candy in it along with powder of 1o black peppers. Give this to the patient. It cures eye disorders, pain in eyes, hiccoughs, and cough etc disorders.
  2. Prepare tea of its shade dried leaves and give this to the patient. It cures headache and any other related disorders. For taste, add a little amount of salt in this tea.


Heat 1-3 flowers and then tie them on the eyes. It cures inflammation of the retina of eyes.


  1. Give 6.5 gm juice of is fresh leaves with honey to the patient. It is beneficial in old cough, bronchial asthma and tuberculosis.
  2. Give 5-10gm decoction of Malabar nut, muunakka and sugar candy, 2-3 times a day. It cures old cough.


Give 1 teaspoonful juice of its leaves with 1 teaspoonful ginger juice and 1 teaspoonful honey. It cures all types of cough.


Give 30-40 gm decoction of its leaves with 2 gm powder of pippali mixed in it. It cures severe bronchitis, bronchial asthma and tuberculosis.


Heat its leaves along with leaves of neem and apply them near the belly button area. Also give 6 gm juice of Malabar nut leaves with 6 gm of honey mixed in it. It gives relief from intense pain in kidneys.


Give 20-30 gm juice of its leaves, 4-6 times a day. It is beneficial in bleeding diarrhea.


Its leaves control menstrual cycle. Take 20 gm of its leaves and 7 gm each of seeds of carrot and radish. Cook them all in ½ kg water till water is reduced to ¼. Give this decoction to the patient to drink. Continue this treatment for a few days.


Take equal amounts of seeds of melon and leaves of Malabar nut. Grind them well and give this to the patient to drink. It causes effortless urination.


Flowers of Malabar nut eradicate tuberculosis and burning sensation. It also reduces the heat of blood.Soak 8-11 flowers in a glass of water over night and next day morning crush the flowers, strain the solution and give this to the patient. It cures burning sensation during urination and also cures the redness.


Grind its dried flowers and sieve and give this to the patient along with sugar syrup and cucumber. It cures spermatorrhoea.


In cases of ascites and when the whole body turns white, give 15-25 gm juice if its leaves, 3-6 times a day. Increases the urination and then cures the disorder.


Take juice of 15 gm of Malabar nut leaves with 2 teaspoonful honey, every morning and evening. It cures leucorrhoea.


Give 15 ml juice of its whole plant with equal amounts of honey and sugar candy mixed in it. Give this to the patient, it cures jaundice completely.


Take equal quantities of its leaves and white sandalwood. Grind them together to form, a fine powder. Give 4 gm of this powder to the patient, every morning and evening. It is very beneficial in case of bleeding piles and also controls bleeding from the boils. In case of swelling in piles, take steam of its decoction.


Take equal quantities of leaves of Malabar nut and Indian gooseberry. Grind them solid and soak them in an earthen vessel in the evening. Next day morning, grind the solution and extract the juice. Mix 15 gm sugar candy in this juice and give this to the patient.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) plants are found all over India. It has two varieties shatavari (small flower) asparagus racehorses and mahashatavari asparagus sarmentosus, for is described here as it has more medicinal value.


It has thorny, bushy and climbing vine. Thorns are1/4 to ½ inch long or slighty curved. The leaves are in groups of 3-7, in the shape of sickle and bent downwards. The flower bunches are 2-3 inch long, single or in bunches with single or branched stem.


Regarding its properties, ayurveda practitioners and experts have different opinions, which are listed below:

  1. According to bhaea prakash it is heavy, cool and bitter and nutritive. It enhances intelligence, promotes digestion, pacifies vata and pitta disorders and cures reduced semen production.
  2. According to acharya sushrat asparagus is beneficial in dryness and promotes physical strength. It beneficial in dryness and promotes physical strength. It purifies semen, enhances intelligence, and promotes digestive fire.
  3. According to dhanvantari nighantu, shatavari can cure even a very weak person. It promotes physical strength in the patient and enables the patient to fight the diseases. In enhances the immune system. It suppresses vata pitta, produces semen, is cool, and sweet.



Prepare its kheer and add ghee in it. Give this to the patient.


Cook its leaves in ghee and give this to the patient. It cures night blindness.


Extract juice from its fresh root and mix equal amount of sesame oil in it and boil the solution. Massage the head with this oil. It cures headache and migraine.


Give asparagus, bala and sugar mixed with honey to the patient it cures hoarseness of voice.


Mix 1 mix peepal powder in asparagus decoction and give this to the patient thrice a day.


Boil 10gm asparagus, 10gm leaves of adusa and 10gm sugar in 150ml water give this to the patient thrice a day in cures dry cough.


Take 1 part of its paste, 1 part gbee, and 4 parts milk.boil them together to form gbee. Give this to the patient as much as required it cures acidity, excessive bleeding vata and pitta disorders, bronchial asthma and unconsciousness.


Give its 20 gm powder with milk to the lactating mother. It increases the amount of milk production or grind it with cow milk and give this to the lactating woman. It makes the milk tasty, sweet and nutritive.


Grind wet asparagus with milk. Strain the milk and give this to the patient 4-6 times a day.


Cook it and eat or cook its powder in milk and eat. It enhances the potency.


Split the wet asparagus and take out the straw inside.


Prepare squash of asparagus and gokhru and give this to the patient. It cures all types of urinary disorders.


Give asparagus ghee to the patient. It cures the weakness of body.


Give 6-12 gm asparagus ghee to the patient, regularly. It enhances semen production.


  1. Mix honey and sugar in decoction of its root and give this to the patient. It cures dysuria.
  2. Take 30 gm whole plant of gokhru and equal amount of asparagus and boil them ½ liter water. Strain the solution and add 15 gm sugar candy and 3 teaspoonful honey in it. Give this to the patient in little amounts. It cures the burning sensation during urination and clears obstruction in urination. Or give milk decoction of gokhru and asparagus every morning and evening to the patient. It cures dysuria.


Mix 30 gm of its juice in equivalent amount of cow milk and give this to the patient. It cures even old stones in body.


Mix 30 gm of its juice in 90 ml milk and give this to the patient. It cures burning sensation completely.

Coriander (Dhania) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

Every household in India uses dry Coriander (Dhania) fruit as spice. Everyone is aware of its importance in spices. So only the medicine properties and use are discussed here.


Coriander plant is an annual herb with branches and sub branches with a soft, distinctive odour. It is 1-3ft tall. The leaves are serrated. Leaves on the lower side are serrated and those on the upper side are like thin vertical rtrands.


It cures tridosas, swelling and oedema. It relieves pain, and also thirst. It is a natural purgative and improves digestion. It excites liver and is rakta pitta shamak. It is beneficial for heart and cures cough, urine infections.



  1. Grind 10gm coriander and boil it in one glass of water and then strain the solution through fine cloth. Put 1 drops each in both the eyes. It cures conjunctivitis disorder and also cures pain in the eyes. It reduces the itching in the eyes and also cures watery eyes.
  2. Put 1-2 drops of coriander juice in the eyes. It prevents the chicken pox boil in eyes.
  3. Boil 10gm coriander in 200ml water is reduced to 1\4th. Use this water to rinse the eyes. It cures whiteness of eyes, swelling and wound in the eyes due to chicken pox.
  4. Take and grind equal quantities of coriander and berley seeds. Prepare a poultice of the paste and apply on the eyes. It cures swelling of the eyes.


Grind 15-20 gm coriander and mix with barley powder (sattu). Apply this regularly. It cures multinodular tuberculosis.


Chew 6- 10 seeds of coriander every morning and evening. It cures throat pain.


Soak equal quantities of coriander and Indian gooseberry overnight in water. Next day morning, grind and strain the solution. Give this with sugar mixed in it. It cures headache due to heat.


Grind 30 gm coriander leaves and mix a little amount of camphor in it. Put 2-3 drops in the nose and also apply a few drops on the head. It controls nasal bleeding.


Grind 20-30 gm coriander in the rice water and add sugar to it. Give this to the child every morning, afternoon, and evening. It cures cough and also is beneficial in asthma in children.


Boil 7-14 gm seeds with a glass of water and 5gm sugar candy. Give this to the patient. It stops the bleeding from boils.


Give 5-10gm of coriander powder with 5gm sugar, every morning and evening. This helps cure joint pain due to heat.


  1. In case of stomach pain due to heat, give 1gm coriander powder with 3gm, 1-2times a day.
  2. In case of gas due to indigestion of food, give 5-10ml coriander oil. It brings immediate relief.


In case of vomiting during pregnancy, give 50gm decoction of coriander with 10gm sugar and 10gm rice water mixed in it. Give this solution repeatedly in small quantities to the pregnant woman.

Linseed (Alasi, Flex Seed) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

All over India Linseed (Alasi, Flex Seed) is grown along with Rabi crop. It is also grown in Himachal Pradesh at a height of 6000 ft. The linseed color and size vary from place to place. White, yellowish- red and slightly brown are the various colours of linseed. The variety that is grown in warmer areas is said to be of the best quality. Linseed is used for extracting oil from the seeds and fiber from the branches.


This annual plant is 3-5 inch tall, straight, and soft. The leaves are striped and spear- like in shape with a pointed tip, the part containing the fruits has three compartments. The flowers are pretty sky blue. The fruits are nipple shaped with five chambers. Each chamber has two shining flat dark brown seeds.


The seeds contain a stable oil which constitutes mainly glycerides and fatty acids of linolic, and linolenic acids. Seeds also contain a poisonous glucoside, which is why when animals consume linseed, they die. In addition, the seeds also include proteins, mucilages, and wax like chemicals, a sticky substance, phosphates and sugars. Its ash contains sodium, potassium.


The seed is mildly fragrant, smooth, warm, and pungent. It enhances physical strength and potency. Taken in small quantities it increases urine flow and removes sluggishness. Taken in large quantities it is purgative and cures many diseases but affects eyesight.



Grind the linseed seeds in cold water and apply the paste on forehead. It relieves one of oedema related pain, headache and any wounds in the head.


Take fresh linseed oil and castor oil in equal quantities. Mix the two oils in a copper vessel.Using a copper rod apply the mixture in both the eyes.


Put a few drops of mucilage of linseed oil in the eye. It is beneficial in conjunctivitis or redness of eyes.


Cook linseed with onion juice and put a few drops of it in the ear.It also cures any kind of swelling in the ear.


  1. Soak 5 gm linseed in 60 gm water for 14 hrs and them give this water to the patient to drink soak the seeds in the morning and drink in the evening. Similarly, soak in the evening to drink in the morning. This treatment enhances physical energy when given to the patient. Be careful about following the recommended diet and anything to be avoided.
  2. Take 5 gm linseed powder and boil it in water. Mix 30 gm sugar candy and give the patient. During winters, instead of sugar mix honey. Give this solution to the patient every morning and evening. It helps cure breathing problem.
  3. Take 4 gm linseed and grind them coarse. Soak the ground mixture in 280 gm boiled water and cover it for an hour. After an hour, strain the solution, add sugar and give it to the patient. It helps in softening dry cough and relies the patient. It also purifies urine.
  4. Grind 28 gm linseed and then soak the powder in cold water overnight. Next day morning, strain the solution, heat it till lukewarm, add lemon juice to it and give to the patient. It is beneficial for patients of tuberculosis.
  5. Clean the linseed seeds and then roast on a hot plate at low heat. When it starts smelling of the roasted linseed, add equal amount of sugar to it. In case of cold, give 7 gm of this mixture with hot water, twice a day. It gives great relief and also eradicates any breathing problems.


Take 60 gm of roasted linseed seed powder, 60 gm sugar and 14 gm chili powder. Mix them with honey and prepare tablets of 5-8 gm each. These tablets must be taken min the morning (4 gm tablet for children and 7gm tablet for adults). It cures all kapha related disorders. Do not drink water till 6 hour after taking the tablets.


  1. Take 50 gm linseed and 6 gm. liquorice. Grind them coarse. Mix the two with 370 gm water in an earthen pot and cook it on low heat. When 60 gm of water is left, strain the solution and mix 4 gm kalami shored in it. Give 30 gm. of this solution to the patient at an interval of 3 hours. This helps in curing urinary disor- der. This mixture can be prepared in large quantities and can be used for 12- 16 days.
  2. Take equal quantities of linseed and mulethi and grind them. Take 50- 60 gm of grinded powder in an earthen pot and add 2 kg boiled water to it. Cover the pot for an hour and then strain the watern and add 25- 35 gm kalami shora in it. Store the mixture in a bottle. Give 26 -20ml of this mixture to the patient at an interval of 4 hours. Within 24 hours, the treatment brings relief from various urinary disorders like burning sensation, inconsistent urine flow, blood in urine, formation of pus.
