Sinusitis – Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Ayurvedic Treatment


Sinusitis also known as “Sinus Infection” is a very common condition that affects 16-20% of adults and children in which mostly diagnosed patients are women. The overall range of people suffering from sinus is 20%. It’s a painful inflammation caused by a viral, bacteria, or fungal infection. Hurdles faced by sinus patients are problem in breathing and congestion.


Symptoms of Sinusitis

There can be distinct symptoms but certain commonly seen symptoms are:-

  • Headache, pain or pressure in the face or around eyes, greenish nasal discharge
  • Pain and headache may get worse when bending over or lying down
  • Fatigue, stiff neck, sore throat, stiff neck
  • In some cases fever may also occur

Causes of Sinusitis

The cause of untold stitch strikes about 5 million people in a year in which 1 out of people are in India.

  • Virus – Most of the sinus infections start with cold
  • Allergies – As inflammations can block the nasal passages and prevent evacuations; allergies are often associated with sinus infection.
  • Troublesome – Dust, external air pollution and strong essence like perfumes may play a vital role in coughing, irritation in nose that leads to inflammation enabling the risk of sinusitis.
  • Swimming and Diving – Swimming in a pool where water is chlorinated can harm the nasal tissue and increase the chance of nasal blockage.

Diagnosis of Sinusitis

First and the foremost precaution for diagnosing chronic sinus is:-

  • Evaluation through blood tests. Blood samples are taken in order to indentify underlying situations such as Cystic Fibrosis, Viral Bacteria. However mucus samples may also be obtained.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Scan – Various scan images from various angles of the facial area with the help of special X-RAY appliances to identify tumors, cysts, inflammatory disease.
  • Membrane Biopsy – It involves removing tissue and examining it under a microscope to see deeply the infection.

Nasya Karma – Panchakarma Therapy for Sinusitis Treatment

Nasya therapy is a process wherein herbal oils and medicated ghrits are administered in the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway to the head, it is believed that this therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases related to the head. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation which has a direct influence on the functioning of the brain. In this process, the imbalanced doshas are removed through the nasal openings.


Nasya karma can be performed either in sitting or in lying position. Firstly light massage with medicated oil is done over the face followed by steam or swedana karma. This process is done for about 10 minutes and proper care of the eyes are taken by covering them. After this the medicine is instilled in the nostrils of the patient. Medicated smoke is given to the patient followed by gargles at the end of the whole procedure.

Herbal Remedies for Sinusitis, Ayurvedic Treatment – Causes & Symptoms


Sinusitis is defined as an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air, but when sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs grow and cause an infection.

There are four pair of sinuses in the body. Sinusitis can be classified by the sinus cavity which it affects:-

  1. Maxillary sinusitis – Causes pain and pressure in the cheek region. Patient feels symptoms like toothache and headache.
  2. Frontal sinusitis – Cause pain and pressure in the region located above the eyes. Patient experiences pain particularly in the forehead.
  3. Ethmoidal sinusitis – Causes pain in between the eyes, the sides of the upper part of the nose.
  4. Sphenoidal sinusitis – Cause pain and pressure behind the eyes, mainly at the top of the head, over the mastoid process and at the back of the neck.

According to ayurveda, this can be compared with Dushta Pratishyaya. Main dosha involved in this is kapha dosha. Aggravated kapha dosha vitiates prana vayu, present in the respiratory tract. Besides, weak digestion leads to the formation of ama. This ama gets mixed with kapha in the sinus area and leads to the production of sticky mucus called sleshma. Sleshma settles in the area and clogs the channels of the sinuses. Due to restriction and blocking, pitta dosha gets imbalanced and causes inflammation. As a result, immunity gets weakened and body becomes fertile ground for microbes, allergens and viruses, which further causes the problem of sinusitis.

Panchakarma therapies that can be done in sinusitis are:-

  1. Nasya

  3. Shiro Abhyanga

  • Avoid consuming too hot or too cold food items.
  • Avoid spending much time in AC rooms and do not sleep directly under the fan.
  • Massage with sesame oil on both the sides of the nose.
  • Avoid curd, lady finger, tomato and other kapha aggravating food items.
  • Eat fibre rich vegetables to keep the bowel system clear.
  • Don’t skip or delay meals as it will disturb the digestive fire and case digestive weakness.
  • Use regularly cinnamon, black pepper, cumin seeds, mint, onion, basil, garlic, honey, coriander, rock salt, fennel, clove, turmeric, ginger, liquorice etc in your diet.


  • Take a clean cloth. Add one teaspoon black cumin seeds. Wrap the cloth and place near the nose and inhale.
  • Roast one teaspoon cumin seeds and crush them. Add one tablespoon honey to it and mix well. Consume this every day.
  • Add one teaspoon fenugreek seeds in four cups of water. Boil the mixture till the water level reduces to half. Strain the liquid. Drink four cups of this liquid every day. This helps in relieving fever and eliminating toxins.
  • Boil one glass of water with 8-10 basil leaves, 8-10 crushed powder of pepper, 15-20 grams of sugar candy, small piece of crushed ginger. Boil this till it reduces to half. Strain the mixture through a sieve and consume this warm two times a day.
