Pyorrhoea (Periodontitis) is an advanced stage of gum disease. It is generally a painless disease and thus often goes neglecting. It affects the membrane surrounding roots of the teeth and leads to loosening of the teeth, pus formation and shrinkage of the gum.

The gums become tender and on pressing pus oozes out along the margin of the teeth. Pus from the cavities continually finds its way into the stomach. When the disease is far advanced, the gums become swollen and the stomach being dosed with increasing quantities of pus does not function properly. A sepsis may appear in various forms, digestion process gets disturbed, liver does not functions properly and the whole system gets adversely affected.

The most common cause of pyorrhea is the presence of microorganisms on the gums and teeth. These microorganisms survive and multiply from the food that is left on the teeth. It creates acid, enzymes and toxins that lead to tooth decay.

According to ayurveda, pyorrhea is compared with Dantaveshta or Putidanta and is caused due to vitiation of the rasa and Rakta dhatu. This vitiation is caused by impaired digestion. The toxins produced during digestion mix with these two dhatus and then accumulate in the gums and oral cavity. The toxins come out during brushing.

  • Fruits rich in vitamin C like guava, banana and orange should be taken. They strengthen the gums and teeth and are effective in preventing and curing acute inflammations of the gum margins.
  • Vegetables like bittergourd, potato and drumstick are useful.
  • The things which stick to the roots of teeth should be avoided as far as possible.
  • The twig of neem or banyan should be used for brushing.
  • Hot water mixed with borax should be used for gargling mouth.
  • Maintain regularity in food timings.
  • Eat suitable diet according to the body constitution and perform physical excercises.
  • Avoid sedentary lifestyle, late night meals, day time sleep as they disturb the process of digestion.
  • Avoid eating too hot or too cold items together like drinking a hot coffee or tea just after eating an ice cream.
  • Avoid having heavy to digest food items and that food stuffs that produce toxins in the body.
  • Maintain oral hygiene by brushing twice, scaling and flossing.


  • Take some orange or lemon peels. Rub them on the gums for 5 minutes. Do this two times a day. This helps in improving the condition.
  • Take two teaspoons of crushed pomegranate. Add half teaspoon black pepper to it and one teaspoon salt. Mix well and apply this paste on the gums. Massage for about five minutes and then gargle with lukewarm water. Apply the mixture of salt and pepper. Its regular application strengthens the gums, stops bleeding and prevents pyorrhoea.
  • Take a handful of spinach leaves and add one chopped carrot. Crush both of these ingredients and make the paste. Now press the paste on the sieve and extract the juice. Drink this juice three times a day.
  • Take 4-5 cinnamon barks in a vessel of water and dip in for an hour. Allow it to cool down and strain the water. Gargle your mouth with this wash.
  • Make a paste with one spoonful of pure ghee and some camphor. Mix this well and apply this on the gums for atleast two times a day.
