Prishta Vasti – Panchakarma Treatment for Whole Spine Related Diseases

Prishta means complete back region. Prishta Vasti is a procedure where medicated oil is retained over back region for a specific period of time. It is mainly indicated for the diseases related to whole spine.

PROCEDURE

The patient is made to lie on the massage table. The dough which is prepared by using wheat flour or black gram is placed over the whole vertebral column. Lukewarm medicated oil is poured into it and is made to stay for some time. When the oil gets cooled, it is squeezed out using a cotton swab and warm medicated oil is again poured into it. This step is repeated for about 5-6 times. The procedure lasts for about half an hour. After the treatment is over, the oil is removed along with the dough and gentle abhyanga or massage with the same oil is done over the vertebral column for the better absorption of the oil. The patient is advised to take rest for a while.

Kati Vasti – Panchakarma Treatment for Lower Back Pain

The waist area of the body is called Kati and holding warm medicated ayurvedic oils on the affected area is called Vasti. Kati vasti is a highly effective treatment to alleviate stress, pain or swelling in the lower back wherein warm medicated oil is poured into an enclosed area of the waist created with a bridge of dough.

PROCEDURE

Firstly the patient is asked to lie face down on the bed or massage table. Medicated oil is locally applied around the lumbo-sacral region and then a reservoir made of black gram or wheat flour dough is built around the area. Making sure that it is leak proof, lukewarm medicated oil is slowly poured into it. When the oil starts to cool down, it is squeezed out using cotton and more warm oil is poured in it. The oil is kept for around 30 minutes.

Once this part is done, the affected area is gently massaged for better absorption of the medicated oil. This is usually done for a course of 7 days or as advised by the ayurveda practitioner.

CHOLESTROL

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in every cell of the body. Its natural function is to help in digesting foods and generating vitamin D. the body also uses the substance to protect nerves, make cell tissues and produce certain kinds of hormones. Usually the cholesterol produced by the liver is enough to fulfil its essential functions; however the body also gets direct cholesterol from dietary sources such as poultry, eggs, fish and dairy products. Plant based food products contain s no cholesterol. Therefore too much cholesterol can have negative impact on one’s health.

Liver regulates the cholesterol content in the bloodstream. Cholesterol from the food is absorbed from the small intestine and metabolized to be stored in the liver. The liver then accordingly produces cholesterol according to the needs of the body. Presence of too much cholesterol can cause the walls of the arteries to narrow due to build-up of deposits.

 

 

TYPES

Cholesterol is not capable of travelling through the bloodstream on their own they are carried by lipoproteins. There are two types’cholesterol carrying lipoproteins; one is a low density lipoprotein or LDL and the other one is a high density lipoprotein or HDL.

Low density lipoprotein or LDL

LDL cholesterol is considered to be the “bad” cholesterol, because it contributes to fatty build-ups in the arteries .This condition leads to  narrowing down of the arteries which increases the risk for heart attackstroke and peripheral artery disease.

High density lipoprotein or HDL

HDL can be considered good cholesterol which means higher levels of HDL are actually healthy. It is believed by experts that HDL cholesterol acts as a scavenger which carries LDL cholesterol away from the arteries towards the liver where they get broken down and removed from the body. However HDL cholesterol is not capable of eliminating all LDL cholesterol from the body

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) trees are quite tall and are quite popular. These are dense and proving shade, that’s why these are grown along the roadsides. Tamarind is quite a common tree.

PROPERTIES

Unripe tamarind it is bitter and heavy and cures gas formation it cures pitta cough and blood disorders.

RIPE TAMARIND

Promotes digestive functions it is dry and purgative it is hot and cures kapha and vata.

SEEDS

Cure urinary disorders have binding properties enhance and maintain potency.

MEDICINAL USAGE AND BENEFITS

STOMATITIS:-

Gargle with tamarind water, cures mouth problems due to pita.

HEADACHE:-

Soak 5gm tamarind in a glass of water. Crush it and stain the solution. Mix sugar in it and give this to the patient. It cures headache due to pitta.

STYE:-

In case of boil or acne on eye lips, rub the tamarind seed with water and apply the paste on the boil.

EYE SWELLING:-

Tie the poultice of tamarind flowers on eye. It cures the swelling.

THROAT INFLAMMATION:-

Boil 8 gm. tamarind in 4 liter water till water is reduced to half. Mix 13 ml rose water in the remaining solution. Strain the solution and use this to gargle. It cures swelling in the throat.

DIARRHEA:-

  1. Boil 12-15 gm. tamarind leaves in 500 ml water till water is reduced to ¼. Give this decoction to the patient. It cures diarrhea.
  2. Give 5-8 ml slightly warm juice of tamarind leaves to the patient.
  3. Grind 17 gm. peel of tamarind seeds, 7 gm. cumin seeds and palm jiggery. Give small amount of this powder to the patient to de taken orally. Give it 4- 6 times at an interval of 4-6 hours. It cures old diarrhea due to indigestion also.
  4. Give 4-6 gm. powder of tamarind seeds kernel, with water every morning and evening. It cures diarrhea and also diarrhea caused by indigestion.
  5. Take the bark of root of old tamarind tree and half the amount of black pepper. Mix the two in butter milk and prepare small tablets like the size of pea. Give 3-5 tablets thrice a day. It also cures diarrhea due to indigestion.

BLEEDING PILES: –

Give 11-20 gm. juice of its flowers thrice a day.

DYSENTERY:-

Give 10-20 gm. of its leaf juice after dipping a red hot iron rod 4-6 times a day. Continue this treatment for a few days.

STOMACH PAIN:-

Take its bark and rock salt in an earthen pot and burn them. Give 120mg of the white ash to the patient. It is very beneficial in curing stomach pain and indigestion.

DISINTEREST IN FOOD:-

Give water of ripe tamarind. It strengthens stomach, enhances appetite and cures all the wounds in intestines.

APPETIZER:-

Crush 20gm tamarind in 400ml water and then strain the solution. Add 40gm sugar candy, 30gm cinnamon, 3gm cloves, 3gm cardamom in the solution. Give less than 3ml of this solution to the patient. This is beneficial in curing weakness.

URINARY DISORDERS:-

Soak 120gm tamarind seeds in 200ml milk. After 2days, remove the peel and grind the solution. Give 5gm of this mixture every morning and evening with water or cow’s milk. It cures urinary disorders.

ECZEMA:-

Mix tamarind seeds in lemon juice and apply on the affected area.

BURN:-

Mix 1-2gm powder of its bark with sweet oil and apply it on burnt area.

HIGH GRADE FEVER:-

Soak 20gm tamarind in glass of water overnight. Next day, strain the solution and mix Isabgol powder in it. Give this to the patient. It controls pitta fever.

SUN STROKE:-

Grind the pulp of fruit in cold water and apply on the bald head. It cures the impact of heat stroke and faintness.

BOILS:-

Rinse the boils and wounds with decoction of its leaves.

SMALL POX:-

Prepare cold infusion with tamarind leaves and turmeric. It cures small pox.

Paan Patta (Betel Leaves) – Benefits, Medicinal Usage and Properties

The plant is grown in warm and humid regions, especially in areas of Sanchi, Mahoba, Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, Lanka and Malawa’s Rampura-Manpura. Betel of Banaras is considered to be of the best quality.

APPEARANCE

The original climbing vine of betel is very pretty and soft. The stem is strong and thick at the knots. The leaves are big like those of peepal and are heart shaped with veins: they are smooth and thick with a one inch long stem. The flower bunch is spiked. The fruits are 2inch long, muscular and there are many small fruits in axial group hanging down.

PROPERTIES

Dhanvantari nighantu has described 13 properties of betel which are not available even in heaven. Betel is hot, sour, pungent bitter, sweet and alkaline; it cures vatic disorders, cough and pain. Its oil cures cough and throat, mouth and air passage related disorders.

MEDICNAL USAGE & BENEFITS

HEADACHE:-

Tie betel on ear lobes. It cures the headache due to gastric problems.

ANXIETY:-

Give betel juice with milk to cure anxiety in women.

NIGHT BLINDNESS:-

Put drops of betel juice in eyes. It is beneficial in curing night blindness.

HEART DISORDERS:-

  1. In case of weakness and pain of heart, its use is beneficial. To improve the functioning of heart, instead of digitalis, betel can be administered.
  2. Its squash gives strength to heart. It cures cough and weakened state of digestive fire.

INFLUENZA IN CHILDREN:-

In case of excessive cold, warm a betel leaf and smear it with castor oil and tie it on the chest of the child. It eradicates the impact of cold and also controls the anxiety and uneasiness of child.

CHRONIC RHINITIS: –

Grind its root along with liquorice root and give this to the patient with honey. It cures cold related disorders.

IMPROVING QUALITY OF VOICE:-

Singers should suck its root to make their voice clear and sweet. Its root is very beneficial to to release any cough deposited in the throat. It is also beneficial in curing voice hoarseness.

DIPHTHERIA:-

  1. In case of breathing problem in diphtheria, give the juice of betel to the patient. It cures the swelling of throat and the cough gets released out of the throat. Also give juice of its 3-6 leaves in lukewarm water for gargles.
  2. Give 2-3ml juice of its leaves with honey. It cures dry cough.
  3. Grind its branch and give this to the patient with honey. When given to children, it gives relief in cold.

DIGESTION:-

  1. When betel leaf is suck, it enhances the production of saliva which further enhances the digestive function. It is beneficial in curing the gas formation in stomach.
  2. People who eat betel are safe from disorders caused due to pollution and moisture in environment.

FEVER:-

Give 2.5gm warm extract of betel, 1-2times a day. It cures fever.

SWELLING OF JOINTS:-

Heat the betel leaves and tie them on the swollen area. It relieves the pain and also dissolves the swelling.

WOUND:-

Tie betel leaves on ulcers. It helps the wounds heal faster.

Harmful Effects of Betel Leaves

Eating betel is also an addiction. Regular intake causes addiction. When eaten for the first time, the impact on the mind is noticeable, like giddiness, anxiety etc, but when the person becomes habitual and eats betel regularly, these effects go off slowly. When betel is sucked, it causes excessive formation of saliva, which helps in food digestion, but intake of betel in excessive amounts is harmful.

It is strong, warm and excites pitta. Hence, it is not advised in excessive bleeding, traumatic injury to thorax and faintness like pattik disorders. Excess intake of betel reduces appetite. Liver grows weaker day by day.

  • Prepare a mixture of Ashwagandha powder, shatavari churna and bala moola churna taken in equal quantities and store it in the tight jar. Take one teaspoon of this mixture with warm milk or water two times a day.
  • Prepare a powdered preparation of dried ginger root, celery seeds and cumin seeds taken in equal quantities. Then add rock salt to taste and have one teaspoon of this with water before going to sleep at night.
  • Take half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm water twice a day. This helps in reducing pain and inflammation.
  • Boil one teaspoon of grated ginger root in eight ounces of hot water for 10 minutes. Strain and add honey to it. Have this two or three times a day.
